Field trip to Heidelberg Materials' Rezzato cement plant

19 September 2025, Milan

Heidelberg Materials Rezzato 2

The Rezzato cement plant in the province of Brescia, active since 1964, is an important cement production site of Heidelberg Materials in Italy. In 1998, the cement plant obtained the ISO 9001 quality certification and in 2004 the ISO14001 environmental certification.

Starting in 2012, a comprehensive project for the renovation of the cement plant was launched, aimed at combining production needs with excellent environmental performance in a modern and sustainable way.

The revamp of the grey firing line, completed in 2014 and made fully operational during 2015, allowed the achievement of excellent performance in terms of reduction of emissions into the atmosphere and greater competitiveness, thanks to the efficiency in the consumption of energy and material resources. During 2015 and 2016, the white cement line was also the subject of important interventions in terms of production and the environment, allowing for a significant reduction in water consumption and environmental impacts.

The revamp has allowed the achievement of excellent performance in terms of reduction of atmospheric emissions and greater competitiveness, thanks to the efficiency in the consumption of energy and material resources. The plant is also a European leader in the use of alternative fuels.

Heidelberg Materials has also started a feasibility study for a decarbonisation project at Rezzato cement plant. The project will investigate a potential source-to-sink CCS solution and aims to make the plant the first in Italy to produce carbon captured net-zero cement which will be marketed under the evoZero® brand.

Jon Morrish, member of the Managing Board of Heidelberg Materials and responsible for Europe, said: “With an aspired capture rate of more than 95% of our plant’s emissions, this initiative aims to explore options for industrial-scale CCS in Italy. This would enable us to supply locally produced, carbon captured net-zero cement under our evoZero® brand to customers in the region.”

As announced by Eni and Snam, the Ravenna CCS project aims at leveraging Eni’s depleted gas fields in the Adriatic Sea which would be converted for exclusive use as permanent geological CO₂ storage sites. The total storage capacity of these fields is estimated at more than 500 million tonnes, making this project the reference CCS hub in the Mediterranean. Snam is committed to developing a pipeline network to transport CO₂ from emitters to the Ravenna CCS hub.

The Rezzato Mazzano cement plant is today one of the most modern, sustainable and competitive plants in Europe.
