Canada: Heidelberg Materials North America’s Edmonton cement plant in Alberta now co-processes 50% alternative fuels (AF) following an upgrade. Heidelberg Materials North America installed equipment and infrastructure for AF co-processing with the help of a US$1.71m grant from the Alberta Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction fund.
Nigeria: Lafarge Africa has launched a new alternative fuel and raw material (AFR) platform at its Mfamosing cement plant in Cross River State, with the aim to reduce its CO₂ emissions. The facility will replace traditional fossil fuels with alternative energy sources derived from non-recyclable materials, according to the Nigerian Tribune.
Raysut Cement launches alternative fuel programme
06 November 2024Oman: Raysut Cement Company has launched a programme to recycle industrial byproducts for use as alternative fuel in cement production and electricity generation, to align with Oman's goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
Hilal bin Saif Al-Dhamri, Acting CEO of Raysut Cement, said "We use secondary industrial materials resulting from production processes across various industries. These are recycled in cement manufacturing and are categorised into two types: one that can be reused as an alternative fuel in plants, the other is used as a partial replacement to the main raw materials leveraged for cement production.” He added "We implemented a project to reuse exhaust heat and convert it to electrical energy at the Raysut Cement plant in Salalah. This innovative approach permits the plant to generate approximately 30% of its electrical energy, by reducing around 50,000t/yr of CO₂. As a result, the Salalah Raysut Cement plant stands out as environmentally friendly, distinguished by its capability to provide clean energy for cement production."
Al-Dhamri also noted that the company was able to enhance the efficiency of its Salalah plant through this programme, by reducing the clinker content while improving the performance of cement in concrete. This has reportedly contributed to a CO₂ emissions reduction of around 18% compared to ordinary cement.
Limak Çimento completes hydrogen fuel test at Ankara cement plant
06 November 2024Türkiye: Limak Çimento has carried out a month-long test on hydrogen fuel blends at its cement plant in Ankara. The company partnered with France-based Air Liquide for the supply of hydrogen, which was injected into the preheater tower. The pair previously used a 50% hydrogen blend during a test at Limak’s Polatli plant in June 2024, with ‘excellent results’, according to Hydrogen Insight.
Erkam Kocakerim, CEO of Limak Çimento, said "The purpose of this investment is to enable safe and effective use of hydrogen technologies in our cement kilns and to increase the rate of alternative fuel substitution. We aim to operate the kilns in our seven integrated cement plants with a low-carbon fuel mix between 2030 and 2035."
WKE launches new alternative fuel pellets
17 October 2024UK: Alternative fuel manufacturer WKE has expanded its product range with new pellet sizes, including 9mm and 6mm shortcut pellets for extended burn times and reduced leftover material in cement kilns, and a 16mm pellet for the biomass sector. This development aims to address specific industry challenges and meet growing demand in both UK and international markets.
CEO Ian Jones said "Our new range of pellet sizes represent a significant step forward in our mission to provide a cleaner, greener and cost-effective alternative to fossil fuels. By tailoring our products to meet the bespoke needs of sectors like cement, we can further support these heavy energy-use industries in reducing their dependence on fossil fuels, all while cutting their energy costs and tackling the enormous amount of material that ends up in landfill."
Philippines: Holcim Philippines and Universal Robina Corporation (URC) have entered a tripartite agreement with the local government of Obando, Bulacan, to provide incentives for workers at the town's material recovery facility, based on the volume of refuse diverted. The material recovery facility in Obando has collected and sorted 785t of plastic waste for co-processing. Since 2021, URC and Holcim's waste management unit Geocycle has been processing plastic from URC's operations for co-processing. The plastics are converted into alternative fuels used to power the kiln at Holcim’s plant in Misamis Oriental.
Irwin Lee, URC president and CEO, said "This new agreement, with Obando as a key partner, aims to further drive community-based ‘waste’ diversion efforts. We hope to replicate it in other towns and cities to amplify the impact of what we set out to do three years ago."
Keystone Cement to transport hazardous materials by rail
08 October 2024US: Keystone Cement has sought permissions to transport hazardous materials by rail to its Bath cement plant in Pennsylvania. The Express-Times newspaper has reported that the producer plans to build a six-tank farm and a railcar unloading facility at the plant, scheduled for commissioning in early 2026, to receive the materials. The Bath plant currently receives 10 – 15 tanker trucks of hazardous material daily.
Keystone Cement said "Transporting the hazardous wastes to site by the existing regional and local rail system would reduce the number of tanker trucks on the roads."
Lafarge Canada launches low-carbon fuel facility at Exshaw plant
04 October 2024Canada: Lafarge Canada, a subsidiary of Holcim, has inaugurated a new low-carbon fuel facility at its Exshaw cement plant, in a joint effort with Geocycle Canada. The US$28m facility is supported by a US$7.4m contribution from Emissions Reduction Alberta through the government’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction fund. It will reduce natural gas consumption by up to 50% for one of the plant’s kilns by substituting it with alternative fuels (AF) sourced from construction and demolition materials, primarily wood. Geocycle will process the materials into AF. This initiative is expected to divert up to 120,000t/yr of discarded materials from landfill, reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 30,000t/yr.
President and CEO of Lafarge Canada (West), Brad Kohl, said "Our commitment to building a sustainable future is at the core of everything we do. The low-carbon fuel project is a prime example of how innovation and collaboration can drive positive change, lowering our environmental footprint through the use of discarded biomass materials while closing the material loop to conserve natural resources.”
Colorado firm to build hydrogen plant at Ash Grove Cement plant
27 September 2024US: Colorado-based energy company NovoHydrogen plans to establish a hydrogen production facility at the Ash Grove Cement plant near Durkee, Oregon. Funded by the 2021 federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, the plant aims to start producing hydrogen fuel by 2028, according to CEO and founder Matt McMonagle. The hydrogen produced would be stored at the plant to be used to fuel trucks and other vehicles on-site, as well as potentially being used to power the plant. The construction of the plant will reportedly create 50 jobs.
Phillip Teintze, manager at the Durkee plant, said "The Ash Grove Cement Durkee plant is active in many opportunities to decarbonise our industry. Solutions for low carbon cement manufacturing are significantly challenging in terms of processes and expense. The Durkee plant is excited to see the development of NovoHydrogen’s efforts with the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub. As hydrogen becomes environmentally and economically viable, we believe our facility could act as a distribution site, and potentially utilise hydrogen as a fuel to displace traditional fossil fuels.”
Votorantim Cimentos to build new alternative fuel plant in Sarria
03 September 2024Spain: Votorantim Cimentos will construct a solid recovered fuel (SRF) production plant at its subsidiary Cementos Cosmos’ plant in Oural, aiming to produce up to 0.15Mt/yr of alternative fuel. The facility, spanning 5800m2, will utilise non-recyclable industrial byproducts and various discarded materials from the local community such as plastic, paper and wood, to partially fuel the combustion in its cement kilns. The plant, currently in the public exhibition phase, will start production at 60% capacity, producing 85,000t/yr of alternative fuel. Plans include ramping up to full capacity to produce roughly 0.15Mt/yr. The new plant will create 15 jobs.
Votorantim Cimentos has not detailed the investment in the new facility, although the budget presented to the local council amounts to €12m.
