Iraq: Eggersmann Anlagenbau has expanded its refuse-derived fuel (RDF) production facility in Sulaymaniyah, operated by Ecocem Environmental Solution, part of the Faruk Investment Group. The expansion includes a new Eggersmann TEUTON ZS 55 single shaft shredder and four additional lanes for biological drying using the CONVAERO system. This system is integral to the Eggersmann RDF process, which converts municipal solid ‘waste’ into high calorific value RDF used by the regional cement producers Gasin Cement Company and Bazian Cement Company. The facility, which has a capacity of 1100t/day of RDF, will see an increase with the expansion. The Eggersmann FUEL process utilises biowaste in RDF production, improving both the quantity and quality of the fuel through biological drying in the CONVAERO system, relying on the natural warmth of the composting process. This method reduces methane emissions at landfill sites by integrating biomass into the fuel, according to the company.
Business development manager at Eggersmann, Eugen Becker, said "A particularly high quality substitute fuel is being produced with the Eggersmann FUEL process in Sulaymaniyah, whose net calorific value can be precisely tailored to the customer’s needs over the adjusting of the drying period. This quality makes a noticeable economic difference."
Fornnax launches SR-200 HD dual-shaft primary shredder
22 March 2024India: Fornnax launched its new SR-200 HD dual-shaft primary shredder on 20 March 2024. The supplier says that the launch signifies a major advancement in the field. The SR-200 HD shredder is specially adapted for tyre-derived fuel production. Its slow-speed shafts produce up to 200,000Nm of torque, allowing it to process the most challenging materials. Fornnax secured six pre-launch orders for the shredder, from India, Australia, the Middle East and Europe.
India: Heidelberg Materials subsidiary Zuari Cement has commissioned a 20t/hr alternative fuel (AF) production line at its 7.1Mt/yr Yerraguntla cement plant. The line includes an UNTHA XR3000C shredder. This will support continuous operations and turn waste to AF in a single step, according to Zuari Cement.
HeidelbergCement India technical director Vimal Jain said “We are passionate about driving environmental progress throughout our business, and the use of AF is one way to do that. But this waste-to-energy feedstock comes at a cost, which is why co-processing makes so much sense. When designing this plant, we needed to ensure versatility to allow for changing market conditions, and an investment in technology that makes commercial sense and is built to last.”
Cyprus: Vassiliko Cement has secured environmental clearance to build a new alternative fuel (AF) store at its Vassiliko cement plant in Nicosia. Philenews has reported that the facility will replace the site’s former AF store, which burned down in a fire started by a mobile shredder in June 2022.
Tyre fire breaks out at Vassiliko Cement plant
14 June 2022Cyprus: Vassiliko Cement’s Vassiliko cement plant was the site of a tyre fire in an alternative fuel (AF) storage area on 11 June 2022. The Cyprus Mail newspaper has reported that the fire begun due to a mobile shredder malfunction. Enerco Energy Recovery operates the shredder at the 2.5Mt/yr cement plant. Local residents protested the incident at the site of the plant’s former quarry on 13 June 2022.
BHS-Sonthofen launches RAPAX pre-shredder
22 July 2021Germany: BHS-Sonthofen has launched the RAPAX pre-shredder. The supplier says that the shredder is able to handle various waste fractions including commercial, industrial and construction waste and metal fractions. It is available with shaft lengths of 1.2 – 3.2m. Shafts are able to move synchronously, asynchronously or in reverse.
Mechanical designer Ingo Schneeman said, “The input materials used by our customers can vary greatly, especially in the area of metal recycling. Whether it’s small electrical equipment or white goods, for example, our various programs ensure optimal shredding.”
Geocycle Costa Rica commissions shredder from Untha
02 July 2021Costa Rica: Geocycle Costa Rica has commissioned a XR3000C type shredder supplied by Austria-based Untha. The unit will be used to process locally sorted municipal solid waste (MSW) and hazardous and non-hazardous Industrial Solid Waste (ISW) into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for use at Holcim Costa Rica’s integrated cement plant.
“Having worked with Untha in other countries, the XR3000C was chosen for its flexibility, high-capacity and single step alternative fuel capabilities. We also knew it would be supported by a world-class engineering team,” said Geocycle’s general manager Wilkie Mora Bolanos.
Geocycle is the waste processing subsidiary of Switzerland-based LafargeHolcim. There are currently over 20 Untha shredders in operation in Geocycle facilities worldwide.
Denmark: Norway-based Geminor has established a solid recovered fuel (SRF) production line with a capacity over 40,000t/yr at its Hub waste processing plant in Aalborg. The line will shred and mix municipal solid waste from the region. Geminor will supply 120,000t of SRF to Aalborg Portland Cement over a three year period starting from January 2021. The line includes a chain feeding conveyor supplied by Westeria, a Metso 4000-8 pre-shredder, a Steinert magnetic sorter and a Metso 3550 fine shredder. Aalborg Portland Cement is targeting a 75% SRF substitution rate at its Aalborg cement plant over the period.
South Korea: Finland-based BMH Technology has secured a contract to supply three waste shredding lines at Ssangyong C&E’s integrated cement plants at Donghae and Yeongwol. The lines will supply solid recovered fuel (SRF) for the units. Each line will include a Tyrannosaurus type FineScreen and Air Classifier for separating impurities. The full delivery will contain five Tyrannosaurus type FineShredders. The lines will be commissioned in the autumn of 2021.
Donghae plant will become one of the world’s largest SRF shredding plants producing alternative fuels for the cement industry once the order is complete. The unit will produce 80t/hr of SRF with a particle size under 25mm using two lines and four shredders. The cement plant is the world’s largest with a production capacity of 11.5Mt/yr.
Untha supplies Geocycle Argentina with a new one-step shredder
17 December 2020Argentina: LafargeHolcim waste management subsidiary Geocycle has begun shredding waste at its Córdoba co-processing plant using a new Untha XR3000C one-step shredder supplied by Austria-based Untha. The shredder will produce refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for use at LafargeHolcim’s Córdoba cement plant. It is the 10th Untha shredder Geocycle has commissioned.
Director Mariano Bollo said, “Geocycle Argentina is no stranger to waste shredding for alternative fuel (AF) production. We previously used a dual-shaft machine manufactured by a competitor of Untha’s, but the capacity and reliability of our machine continued to cause us problems. Untha’s low speed, high torque drive means this is a powerful machine with impressive uptime, ease of maintenance and proven capabilities. This – combined with the shredder’s versatility – meant the business case to switch to an XR was strong. While we think carefully about every decision we make, to ensure each shredder we invest in has absolutely the right configuration for every single plant, we now run a number of Untha machines across our global group,” continued Mariano. “The whole life operating costs of this shredder are extremely low, which means we can consistently produce a profitable, environmentally-sound fuel. It therefore comes as little surprise that we’re looking to standardise the technology we use across our business. This has benefits when it comes to procuring and sharing spare and wear parts too. Working in collaboration with Untha’s local engineering specialists, Geocycle is now optimising the design and layout of the waste processing line to double throughputs in early 2021. This XR investment aligns with our global AF production strategy, which doesn’t just improve our cement manufacturing footprint worldwide – it transforms the environmental status of our local communities too.”
