Fives to supply Pillard NOVAFLAM burner to cement plant in France
30 September 2022France: Fives has secured a contract to supply a 65MW Pillard NOVAFLAM burner to a cement producer. The customer’s aims are to continue to maximise alternative fuel (AF) use, to improve clinker quality and to reduce NOx emissions at its cement plant. The order also includes precalciner burners and a natural gas-powered 35MW Pillard hot gas generator, as well as valve trains and pumping systems.
Lehigh Cement’s Picton plant to use alternative fuels
01 September 2022Canada: Lehigh Cement has initiated the administrative process to begin the use of alternative fuels (AF) in cement production at its Picton cement plant in Ontario. Under the company’s plans, the plant will substitute 200t/day of AF for coal and petcoke at the plant. Possible AF sources include excess seed from farm feed production in Ontario. The Picton cement plant previously reduced its CO2 emissions per tonne of cement by 20% through assorted sustainability initiatives.
Picton plant manager Carsten Schraeder said that the move will support Canada’s 2030 emission reduction plan, and also take pressure off landfill sites.
KÇS Kipaş Çimento orders Pyrorotor from KHD Humboldt Wedag
17 August 2022Turkey: KÇS Kipaş Çimento has placed an order with KHD Humboldt Wedag for a Pyrorotor for its Kahramanmaraş cement plant. The supplier says that the equipment will enable the plant's calciner to achieve an alternative fuel (AF) substitution rate of 90%. It will additionally restrict NOx emissions to 800mg/Nm3. After a short shutdown for assemblage of gas duct connections, KHD expects to commission the upgraded system in mid-to-late 2023.
The company says that the KÇS Kipaş Çimento contract represents its 11th Pyrorotor order globally and the first in Turkey.
Lafarge Cement ends Čížkovice cement plant's natural gas reliance through alternative fuels use
17 August 2022Czech Republic: Lafarge Cement says that it has achieved an alternative fuel (AF) thermal substitution rate of 95% at its Čížkovice cement plant. The plant's fuel mix includes contaminant fractions from local plastic recycling. As a result of the move, the plant no longer uses any natural gas in its cement production.
In 2022 as a whole, the producer plans to increase its share of reduced-CO2 cement sales, increase construction waste recycling in its products and reduce its cement's water consumption.
ThyssenKrupp Polysius Asia Pacific to supply step combuster for cement plant in South Korea
10 August 2022South Korea: ThyssenKrupp Polysius’ Asia Pacific division has won an order to supply a Prepol SC type step combustion chamber for an unnamed cement plant in South Korea. The scope of the contract includes engineering, mechanical equipment and some modifications to the preheater tower. The commissioning of the system is planned for the end of 2023.
Regional chief executive officer Lukas Schoeneck said “The current turbulence on the coal market create a lot of pressure in cement plants to significantly increase the efforts on alternative fuels. Especially when talking high thermal substitution rates and lower quality alternative fuels, combustion chamber technologies connected to the calciner – like the Prepol SC - are the most suitable solution in the cement industry. Congratulations to the colleagues in Germany and in Asia working on this project.”
Dangote Cement increases first-half AF substitution by 25%
02 August 2022Nigeria: Dangote Cement says that it raised the thermal substitution rate of alternative fuels (AF) in its group cement production by 25% year-on-year in the first half of 2022. It co-processed 67,200t of locally-sourced waste in its operations during the half.
CEO Michel Puchercos said “Although significant increases in energy and AGO costs are impacting production, we are strengthening our efforts to ramp up the usage of AF. Our on-going Alternative Fuel Project aims to leverage waste management solutions, reduce CO2 emissions and source material locally.”
Siam Cement Group increases alternative fuel use
27 July 2022Thailand: Siam Cement Group (SCG) increased its thermal substitution rate of alternative fuels (AF) to 31% in 2022, compared to 26% in 2021. In 2020 it reported an AF substitution rate of 18%.
National Cement Company of Alabama’s Ragland cement plant upgrade to reduce CO2 emissions by 40%
25 July 2022US: National Cement Company of Alabama has reported that the new kiln line at its Ragland cement plant will reduce the plant’s CO2 emissions by 40%. Its energy consumption will also fall by 30% as a result of the upgrade. The new line includes a 78m-high homogenisation silo, vertical crusher, five-stage preheater and automated clay storage system. AF used in the kiln will include waste tyres, woodchip and sawdust. The new kiln will help in the Ragland cement plant’s transition to 100% Portland limestone cement (PLC) production by 2023, further diminishing its carbon footprint.
Vicat CEO Guy Sidos said "Our ambition is to use AF in all our cement plants around the world. In addition to eliminating fossil fuel energy and replacing it with recycled regional waste, our investments contribute directly to local development. We are proud of the modernisation and transformation of our Ragland site, which was our very first acquisition outside France in 1974."
Argentina: Holcim Argentina says that it will invest US$40m in capital expenditure in 2022. It plans to invest US$15m in its cement and concrete operations and US$15m in its subsidiary Geocycle's three waste management plants, which supply alternative fuel (AF) for its cement production. Of the remainder, US$5m will go towards the construction of a new dry mortars plant in Córdoba, which the company plans to inaugurate in December 2022.
In 2021, Geocycle processed 140,000t of waste into AF and raw materials for cement production.
Germany: Zement- und Kalkwerke Otterbein plans to invest Euro10m in upgrades to its Otterbein cement plant to increase the sustainability of cement production there. The new equipment will include a hot gas filter SCR catalytic converter system. The producer says that this will install the facility as one of the lowest-CO2 cement plants in the world. Local press has reported that, after commissioning the new system, the company plans to increase its approved substitution of biomass as fuel to 100% from 60%.
