Argentina: Holcim Argentina achieved 8.4% alternative fuel (AF) substitution in its cement production in its cement production in 2021. That year, it reduced its CO2 emissions per tonne of cementitious material by 4.2% compared to 2017, to 505kg/t from 527kg/t.
Waste management partner Geocycle processed 140,000t of waste in 2021, up by 20% from 2020 levels. This included 4000t of waste tyres, which alone eliminated 2300t of CO₂ emissions. Geocycle inaugurated Argentina’s first municipal solid waste (MSW) classification facility in Córdoba in November 2021.
Dangote Cement co-processed 89,000t of waste in 2021
25 April 2022Nigeria: Dangote Cement says that it co-processed 89,000t of waste as alternative fuel (AF) in its cement production as a group in 2021. The Nigerian Guardian newspaper has reported that the source materials consisted of biomass, waste tyres, fly ash and oil-based waste.
Speaking on International Mother Earth Day on 22 April 2022, head of AF projects Peter Anagbe said that the company continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable waste management through its advancement of local community recycling projects.
Lafarge Zementwerke’s Retznei cement plant achieves 96% alternative fuel substitution in 2021
19 April 2022Austria: Lafarge Zementwerke used alternative fuel (AF) in 96% of the fuel mix at its Retznei, Styria, cement plant throughout 2021. CEO Berthold Kren congratulated the plant’s team on its ‘outstanding performance’ in phasing out fossil fuels. Kren added that the plant has also led the way in construction waste recycling.
Mexico: Cemex reported 29% alternative fuel (AF) substitution in its global operations in 2021, according to its Integrated Report for the year. The report stated that the group reduced its CO2 emissions per tonne of cementitious material by 4.7% year-on-year.
Mexico: Cemex’s Torreón cement in Coahuila has concluded its first 100% alternative fuel (AF) trial run.
Chief process officer Gerardo Castilla said that the move is ‘A small step for Cemex but a big step for the world.’ He added “Let’s go for more.”
FCT Combustion delivers Turbu-Flex burner for HeidelbergCement’s Hanover cement plant
28 February 2022Germany: Australia-based FCT Combustion has successfully delivered a new Turbu-Flex burner to replace the existing burner at HeidelbergCement’s Hanover, Lower Saxony, cement plant. FCT Combustion will also supply burner accessories and add-ons, an igniter, a flame sensor, fans, blowers and spare parts. The project aims to improve combustion control and maximise alternative fuel (AF) use in the plant’s cement production.
Cemex USA to increase alternative fuel substitution at Brooksville cement plant to 30%
28 February 2022US: Cemex USA plans to increase its rate of alternative fuel (AF) substitution at its 2.2Mt/yr Brooksville, Florida, cement plant to 30%. It will also increase its AF use at its 1Mt/yr Demopolis, Alabama, cement plant. At both plants, the new fuel mix will include biomass. The producer says that it will complete the plants’ transitions before 2023.
US: Lafarge North America has reported that its Paulding, Ohio, plant achieved 99% alternative fuel (AF) substitution in its cement production, up from 95% in past years. The operator said that the fuel change saved 205,000t of CO2 emissions in 2021.
Boral invests in chlorine bypass technology at Berrima cement plant
21 February 2022Australia: Boral plans to install chlorine bypass technology at its Berrima cement plant in New South Wales. The Illawara Mercury newspaper has reported that the installation will help the plant to double its alternative fuel (AF) substitution rate to 100%. This is one of the ways in which the producer aims to reduce its Scope One and Two emissions by 46% between 2020 and 2030.
Vicem But Son Cement eliminates 133,000t/yr of CO2 emissions with alternative fuels
10 February 2022Vietnam: Vicem But Son Cement has reported that it now substitutes between 20% and 30% of its fuel with alternative fuel (AF). Viet Nam News has reported that company says that it eliminated 133,000t of CO2 emissions through AF co-processing in 2021. It has used sewage sludge and industrial waste as sources of AF since September 2019.
