UK: Hanson’s Ribblesdale cement plant plans to upgrade its automatic feed system to increase its usage of solid recovered fuel (SRF). It is part of a three-phase fuel strategy to reduce the amount of coal the unit uses. The subsidiary of Germany’s HeidelbergCement has been using SRF since 2011.
“Successful trials have also been carried out to burn waste paper residues from motor oil filters in the kilns and use of this as an additional alternative fuel will start in 2020,” said Simon Moorhouse, Hanson Cement’s operations manager.
Metso signs service agreement for waste recycling equipment with Core Industrial Solutions in the UK
28 January 2019UK: Sweden’s Metso has signed a service partner agreement for its M&J waste recycling equipment with Core Industrial Solutions. The deal will allow Metso to improve the availability of its services to the waste recycling industry. It has over 100 waste recycling machines in the UK.
"Complemented by Core Industrial Solutions' expertise and commitment, our services will enable maximised plant and operational efficiency with continuous maintenance," said Jens Peter Martensen, General Sales Manager, Metso Waste Recycling at Metso. Metso has also strengthened its overall setup and customer service in the UK and Ireland, by increasing sales personnel amongst other measures, to respond to growing customer needs.
UK: Fraser Cutting has been appointed as the Hazardous Waste Manager at Andusia Recovered Fuels. He will be dealing with hazardous waste enquiries as well as assisting with the sourcing and disposal of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and solid-recovered fuel (SRF).
Cutting holds 32 years in the hazardous waste sector. He started out at Cory Waste Management, before moving to Cleanaway as Manager at the Cambridge Waste Management Centre. He then moved to manage the waste arising at a large oil refinery and eventually spent the last 10 years managing the waste from a large regional hospital for the NHS.
N+P to start Subcoal production at Teeside plant in July 2019
19 November 2018UK: N+P says that Subcoal production will start at its Teeside plant in July 2019. Following nearly a year of de-commissioning and site preparation works. The project has achieved financial close and construction work has commenced following nearly a year of de-commissioning and site preparation works. The plant will consume 0.25Mt/yr of commercial and industrial waste feedstock and will produce 0.19Mt/yr of N+P’s Subcoal product. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor is Fairport Engineering.
The Teeside plant will supply Subcoal pellets to different outlets including Simec Atlantis Energy (SAE) for use in its Uskmouth 220MW coal-fired power station, which is being converted from coal to waste-derived fuel. N+P and SAE have agreed a fuel-supply agreement to supply nearly 1Mt/yr to the power station once it has been converted to using Subcoal in place of coal in 2021. To meet demand for the contract, N+P plans to build a further three Subcoal plants.
Andusia exports solid recovered fuel to European cement producer
12 November 2018UK: Andusia has exported its first consignment of solid recovered fuel (SRF) to an unnamed cement producer operating a Mediterranean plant. The deal is the company’s first SRF contract.
“As Andusia diversifies into other forms of recovered fuels exported to Europe and also within the UK, we hope this further demonstrates how knowledgeable and diverse our business and the Andusia team is,” said Mark Terrell, director at Andusia.
Bunting Magnetics celebrates 40th anniversary of Master Magnets
02 October 2018UK: Bunting Magnetics is celebrating the 40th anniversary in October 2018 of the Master Magnets brand. The Birmingham-based magnetic separator and metal detector manufacturer produces equipment for the recycling, mining and mineral processing industrial sectors. Bunting Magnetics purchased the brand in early 2017.
Master Magnets was founded in 1978 by Geoff Worley, a qualified engineer with 15 years’ experience in the magnetics industry. The company grew in the 1980s and 1990s with an emphasis on the UK coal industry and global mineral processing projects. Later it built a reputation for building permanent overband magnets that are used for the continuous removal of tramp ferrous material from a product stream such as in recycling. The company then worked with recycling companies to develop a compact overband magnet that was better suited to this sector.
In 2003, Master Magnets acquired Integrated Recycling Systems and relocated to Redditch. Further acquisition took place in 2005 with the purchase of the metal detection business. This further expanded their manufacturing portfolio as customers were now able to purchase their metal separation and detection solution from one supplier.
Geoff Worley took partial retirement from the company and Adrian Coleman became general manager in 2008. Following the sale to Bunting Magnetics in 2017 Coleman stayed on as general manager.
Mark Terrell appointed director of Andusia
23 August 2018UK: Andusia Recovered Fuels has appointed Mark Terrell as its director. He joined Andusia in October 2017 as general manager with responsibility for the day to day running of the business and leading the management team. He has worked previously for Thames Water, Veolia, Lafarge, the Environment Agency, Suez UK (formerly Sita) and most recently Ricardo.
N+P Group forms joint venture with Simec to sell refuse-derived fuel pellets to power industry
31 May 2018UK: The Netherland’s N+P Group has started a joint venture with Simec to sells its refuse-derived fuel (RDF) pellet product Subcoal to power stations. The joint venture, Simec Subcoal Fuels (SSF), has signed a 20-year fuel supply agreement with the Uskmouth power station in South Wales, to supply 900,000t/yr tonnes of Subcoal. N+P and Simec want to build at least four new Subcoal production units in the UK to support the contract at Uskmouth.
“This joint venture with Simec is a very important milestone in our growth strategy for alternative fuels with the Fuel Supply Agreement as an excellent foundation, “ said Stijn Jennissen, commercial director of N+P Group.
Simec Group, based in Hong Kong, is an international energy, infrastructure and natural resources business. Its activities span renewable energy generation, mining, shipping and commodities trading through its key hubs in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. In 2016, Simec unveiled its plan to turn the existing 395MW Uskmouth Power Station Newport into a centre of excellence for Advanced Conversion Technologies, using biomass, waste and other sustainable energy sources.
UK: Andusia Recovered Fuels is celebrating the collection of its one millionth tonne of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) to be sent to markets in Europe. The millionth bale will be produced and collected from Associated Waste Management in Leeds and then delivered to a waste-to-energy plant operated by SWB in Bremen, Germany. Since the company launched in 2012 it met its 0.75Mt milestone in 2016 and its 0.9Mt milestone in 2017.
Saxlund Group to present European cement industry case studies at Global CemFuels Conference
09 February 2018UK: Saxlund Group will present a number of case studies covering its experiences supplying alternative fuels and bulk handling systems for cement plants in Europe at the upcoming Global CemFuels Conference taking place in Berlin. Its references include a complete end-to-end solution for one of the UK’s largest cement kilns, incorporating the reception, storage, transportation, screening, weighing and pneumatic injection of solid recovered fuel (SRF). Other project experience includes secondary fuel-handling solutions for CBR Cement in Belgium, plus a refuse-derived fuel (RDF) facility for LafargeHolcim at the company’s plant in Höver, Germany. The company will also be explaining some of the issues encountered when handling modern alternative fuels and how to ensure full plant availability with minimal downtime.
The company will also be explaining its design approach for minimising storage and transfer issues for what can be sticky and challenging materials, including SRF, RDF and other biomass fuels. A key focus will be on activated silo discharge solutions and conveying equipment with an emphasis on ‘First in, first out’ design principles to minimise compaction and material conglomeration. Key technologies covered will include the company’s leading Push Floor and Sliding Frame solutions, bucket elevators and enclosed chain conveyors, plus integrated screening, weighing and dosing solutions.
