Austria: Rohrdorfer Group has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to Humboldt Wedag, a subsidiary of KHD, for the modernisation of the kiln line at its cement plant operations in Gmunden. The upgrade will enable the flexible usage of a wide range of waste fractionally pre-treated derived fuels on a high substitution rate.
The modernisation project comprises the design and supply of KHD’s world´s first ever Pyrorotor Cacliner Technology, as well as the replacement of the existing satellite cooler with a new generation Pyrofloor PFC2 clinker cooler. The existing three station rotary kiln will be fitted with a new kiln drive and a new kiln hood as well as kiln inlet and outlet.
With the installation of the new Pyrorotor Cacliner Technology from KHD the Gmunden plant will be able to burn very coarse waste derived fuels including whole rubber tires, which will lead to drastically reduced requirements in regard to waste pre-treatment. Therefore, the kiln modification will also emphasise on pollutant emission reduction.
The contract includes: three new preheater cyclones; a new preheater ID-fan; a tertiary air duct; a Pyrotop compact calciner mixing chamber; Pyrorotor Calciner burning chamber technology, a Pyroclon Calciner Burning System; a new kiln bypass unit; a multi-fuel Pyro-Jet kiln burner for primary and secondary fuels; a new kiln drive and kiln hood; a Pyrofloor PFC2 clinker cooler equipped with a Pyrocrusher roller type clinker crusher; and Simulex plant simulation software.
KHD services include the dismantling of existing equipment parts as well as the engineering, design, supply and erection of new equipment including commissioning services. Commissioning of the new system is scheduled for April 2019.
Poland: LafargeHolcim has spent Euro36m on upgrades to alternative fuels handling at its Kujawy cement plant. The investment includes preparing the kiln for the use of alternative fuels, building a new terminal, setting up a new automated laboratory and building a hall for storing and processing alternative fuels. The project is intended to adjust the plant’s kiln for processing alternative fuels and securing new alternative fuel sources. The cement producer aims to control the alternative fuels supply chain for its plant from source to kiln.
France: LafargeHolcim has launched a Euro100m upgrade to build a new clinker production line at its Martres cement plant in Tolosane. Construction work on the new line will start in the third quarter of 2018 and will be completed in mid-2020. A key feature of the upgrade will be a focus on using alternative fuels in the new kiln, particularly tyres. Following the project’s completion the plant will have a substitution rate of 80% from 30% at present.
Germany: Schwenk Zement is planning to build a 47 metre high sewage sludge silo at its Allmendingen cement plant. It also wants to build a sewage sludge storage facilty with a capacity of 9600m3, according to the Schwäbische Zeitung newspaper. It intends to use the sludge as an alternative fuel for its kiln. Sludge will be delivered from Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.
Nigeria: Lafarge Africa has reported a record alternative fuels substitution rate of up to 46% at its Ewekoro cement plant. The cement producer reported that its energy optimisation strategy achieved strong performance compensating for gas shortages at a relatively low cost. It added that made progress during the first quarter of 2017 towards initial alternative fuels conversion work at its Mfamosing line II at Ashaka Cement.
Spain: Cementos Cosmos has stopped exports from its Niebla cement plant due to an increase in the price of petcoke. The subsidiary of Brazil’s Votorantim has also implemented a Temporary Regulation of Employment from June 2017 to May 2018 that will enable it to suspend workers or reduce working hours, according to the Huelva Información newspaper. The cement producer says it is waiting for planning permission to install a dosing system for waste fuels that will cut it fuel bill. However, the local community has opposed attempts to use alternative waste fuels previously.
Ireland: An Bord Pleanála (ABP), a government planning body, will decide by 8 August 2017 on a planning appeal by Irish Cements about its proposed upgrade at its Limerick cement plant. The Euro10m upgrade includes the development of land to facilitate on site handling, storage and introduction of alternative fuels with conveyor kiln, storage tanks, uploading station, handling building, cooling tower and associated ancillary work. If the appeal is successful then the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will decide if the cement producer can have a licence to burn waste fuels at the site, according to the Limerick Leader newspaper. Irish Cements has faced local opposition against its plans for the site.
Speed cement plant starts legal action against local government for stopping it using alternative fuels
23 March 2017US: Lawyers representing the Speed cement plant in Indiana have started taking legal action against the Clark County planning commission for reversing permission for the site to use alternative fuels. The plant’s lawyers say it invested US$1.5m on a fuel conversion project, according to the Courier Journal newspaper. The plant also says that it will lose money as coal is more expensive to burn. The local planning commission reversed a previous decision to let the plant burn alternative fuels in mid-2016 following complaints by the public.
Trinidad & Tobago: Kazim Hosein, the minister of Local Government and Rural Development, is considering allowing the Trinidad Cement company to burn waste fuels at its cement plant. This follows a visit by Trade Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon to the plant, according to the Trinidad Express newspaper. The cement producer has proposed burning waste fuels as part of an expansion plan.
Eco Green installs tyre shredder at National Region Cement
20 February 2017Saudi Arabia: Eco Green has installed a tyre shredding system at the National Region Cement plant. The cement producer ordered a two-shaft primary shredder, according to Recycling Product News. Also known as the Eco Green Giant, the shredder can process up to 30t/hr of whole tyres and it has an output range of 5 – 15cm.
