Cemex Egypt and VeryNile launch Cleaning the Nile scheme in Assiut

Egypt: Cemex Egypt has expanded its Cleaning the Nile waste recovery scheme, in partnership with VeryNile, into its home city of Assiut. Workers from the local fishing industry delivered four truckloads of plastic waste to Cemex Egypt's Assiut cement plant.

Cemex Egypt and UAE regional president Carlos Gonzalez said “Since we started working with VeryNile, we have wanted to expand the initiative to Assiut, and we are delighted to see the initiative taking off in our second year of cooperation."

Holcim Philippines processes 1Mt of waste into alternative fuel

Philippines: Holcim Philippines says that it has successfully processed its millionth tonne of waste into alternative fuel (AF) for use in its cement production. BusinessWorld News has reported that the cement producer reached this circular economy milestone in partnership with 35 different municipal authorities.

Holcim Philippines CEO Horia-Ciprian Adrian said "Our success in reusing discarded materials is further reducing our consumption of natural resources and carbon footprint. This also enables us to help industries and communities achieve their zero waste objectives."

Republic Cement and Ecoloop seek new waste management partners

30 January 2023

Philippines: CRH subsidiary Republic Cement and its waste management subsidiary Ecoloop are seeking to establish partnerships with 'sustainability-minded' organisations. BusinessWorld News has reported that Republic Cement and Ecoloop process waste for 12 private companies and 30 local government units. Philippines law will require that large organisations recover 80% of their plastic packaging waste by 2030. For 2023, the minimum is 20%.

Ecoloop managing director Angela Edralin-Valencia said “Our goal is to make our cement a greener and more environmentally friendly product. Our ambition is to replace 50% of our fuel consumption with alternative fuel." She added "A lot of investments have to be put in place from our end to get to that number, but we are still reviewing our options.”

Cemex and VeryNile partner to expand Nile waste collection

Egypt: Cemex has signed a three-year cooperation protocol with VeryNile. Local press has reported that VeryNile is in the process of expanding its waste collection capacity. Through the partnership, the cement producer will provide finance for VeryNile's waste collection equipment purchases and cover its operating costs.

South Korean partnership develops better alternative fuels

South Korea: Sampyo Cement, the Korea Cement Association, LG Chem, Hyundai Rotem and the Korea Engineers Alliance have partnered to tackle the issue of chlorine dust from alternative fuels (AFs). AJU News has reported that LG Chem will develop a product to prevent chlorine dust from attaching to the insides of cement kilns. It will thereby also develop a domestic source of potassium chloride, for use in the production of potassium hydroxide and potassium carbonate. Hyundai Rotem will supply chlorine dust treatment facilities for the project.

ACC and Ambuja Cements install second Geocycle Bubble Barrier in waterway

India: ACC and Ambuja Cements have together installed a Geocycle Bubble Barrier plastic waste separator in Bhakra Beas Management Board Lake at Sunder Nagar, Himachal Pradesh. The installation will collect the waste for use as refuse-derived fuel at ACC’s Gagal cement plant in the state.

The Holcim India subsidiaries’ first such installation, on the Mantola Canal in Uttar Pradesh, has collected 500t of plastic waste since its commissioning in April 2021, and is targetting a total of 2400t in 2022.

Holcim India CEO and managing director Neeraj Akhoury said "We are committed to building a sustainable future by adopting clean and green technologies. Our efforts and expertise in co-processing has created a unique solution to sustainable disposal of the marine plastic waste that creates pollution. This initiative will also contribute towards promoting circular economy. Taking this mission ahead, we will continue our efforts to implement this innovative technology across the country."

Titan Cement and TERNA Energy to establish two waste management plants

Greece: Titan Cement has partnered with TERNA Energy to establish two mechanical and biological waste treatment plants for municipal solid waste (MSW) processing in Attica and Central Macedonia regions. Titan Cement’s aim is to secure a supply of high-quality alternative fuel (AF) for its regional cement operations. The partners have begun the public tender process for the projects.

LafargeHolcim Russia and government to work on waste disposal programme

Russia: LafargeHolcim Russia and the Ministry of Construction Industry, Housing and Utilities of the Moscow Region have signed an agreement to work together on a waste disposal programme. The document was signed by Anton Velikhovsky, the Minister of Housing and Communal Services of the Moscow Region, and Maxim Goncharov, the chief executive officer of LafargeHolcim in Russia. The project will use the cement producer’s plants, including the integrated Schurovsky plant, to process waste products.

Geocycle delivers first batch of River Jojari waste to ACC and Ambuja Cement

India: Switzerland-based LafargeHolcim’s waste management subsidiary Geocycle has delivered a consignment of 10t of plastic waste from the River Jojari in Rajasthan to its processing plants at local cement plants run by ACC and Ambuja Cement. Geocycle has partnered with Rekart Innovations with the aim of clearing 150t of plastic waste from the river. The partnership will also undertake restoration of riverine habitats.

LafargeHolcim India chief executive officer Neeraj Akhoury said, "We are committed to building a sustainable future by adopting clean and green technologies. Geocycle India has been part of many initiatives and has helped both Ambuja and ACC cement to make use of waste from the different industrial sectors by getting closer to achieve the Net Zero Waste goal. Geocycle's vast co-processing infrastructure guarantees safe and environmentally friendly final treatment of the collected waste."

Brazilian Portland Cement Association launches energy recovery programme

04 June 2020

Brazil: The Brazilian Portland Cement Association (ABCP) has joined with the Brazilian street cleaning, waste management and biogas associations in launching the Brazilian Waste Energy Recovery Front for the reuse of waste in energy production. The partners estimated that some 14.5GWh/yr of energy is available for generation from Brazil’s 79Mt/yr of solid urban waste alone. The ABCP said that it was enthused by the possibilities the waste holds for cement producers, and urged the Environment Ministry to ‘reduce regulations that hinder its use.’
