Iraq: Eggersmann Anlagenbau has expanded its refuse-derived fuel (RDF) production facility in Sulaymaniyah, operated by Ecocem Environmental Solution, part of the Faruk Investment Group. The expansion includes a new Eggersmann TEUTON ZS 55 single shaft shredder and four additional lanes for biological drying using the CONVAERO system. This system is integral to the Eggersmann RDF process, which converts municipal solid ‘waste’ into high calorific value RDF used by the regional cement producers Gasin Cement Company and Bazian Cement Company. The facility, which has a capacity of 1100t/day of RDF, will see an increase with the expansion. The Eggersmann FUEL process utilises biowaste in RDF production, improving both the quantity and quality of the fuel through biological drying in the CONVAERO system, relying on the natural warmth of the composting process. This method reduces methane emissions at landfill sites by integrating biomass into the fuel, according to the company.

Business development manager at Eggersmann, Eugen Becker, said "A particularly high quality substitute fuel is being produced with the Eggersmann FUEL process in Sulaymaniyah, whose net calorific value can be precisely tailored to the customer’s needs over the adjusting of the drying period. This quality makes a noticeable economic difference."

Costa Rica: Holcim subsidiary Geocycle has commissioned its new US$15m Agua Caliente de Cartago waste processing plant. The plant will process 75,000t/yr of municipal solid waste into refuse-derived fuel for use at Holcim Costa Rica’s 1.1Mt/yr Agua Caliente de Cartago cement plant.

Holcim Costa Rica CEO Andrea Lara said "Accelerating sustainable growth means driving innovative solutions that allow us to decarbonise cities, and today Costa Rica is a leader in the region through this project.”

Mexico: Geocycle Mexico aims to process 1Mt of industrial and urban waste into alternative fuel (AF) for use in Holcim Mexico's cement plants in 2023. The El Economista newspaper has reported that the company processed 600,000t-worth of waste in 2022. Geocycle Mexico says that it has helped to raise Holcim Mexico's AF substitution rate to 25%.

The supplier said "Latin America is the region that recycles the least in the world. According to the World Bank, less than 5% of the real capacity we have is recovered. That is why, for 30 years, we have sought to solve this problem by integrating waste into Holcim's production process."

India: Nuvoco Vistas has commissioned feeding systems for alternative fuel (AF) in the pyro-process sections of its Nimbol and Risda cement plants. The systems will handle municipal solid waste, including unrecyclable plastic.

Managing director Jayakumar Krishnaswamy said "As part of our Protect Our Planet agenda, we view the AF projects as an important step towards fulfilling our commitment to sustainable cement manufacturing and reducing the environmental impacts. The successful completion of this project demonstrates our commitment to reducing carbon emissions, maximising waste consumption and demonstrating responsible resource management practices.” He added "This along with, other themes under Protect Our Planet agenda, is enabling Nuvoco to build robust partnerships with several stakeholders, and contribute to society at large.”

Laos/Indonesia: Thailand-based UAC Global plans to invest US$2.89m in an upgrade to its Khammouane refuse-derived fuel (RDF) plant. The plant will supply RDF to Siam Cement Group (SCG) for use in its operations in the country.

The Bangkok Post newspaper has reported that UAC Global plans to build a US$5.78m RDF plant in Sukabumi, Indonesia. The plant will use 73,000t/yr of municipal solid waste (MSW), in addition to waste recovered from a 500,000t-capacity landfill site.

Mexico: Cemex's waste management subsidiary Regenera has signed a deal with the municipal council of Huajuapan de León to receive the latter's sorted non-recyclable municipal solid waste (MSW). Under the deal, Regenera will receive up to 6000t/yr of MSW, which it will supply to Cemex's Tepeaca cement plant in Puebla.

Argentina: Geocycle is working to double the municipal solid waste (MSW) processing capacity of its facility in Yocsina, close to Córdoba, from 50,000t/yr to 100,000t/yr. The subsidiary of Holcim receives waste from surrounding settlements like Piedra Blanca and Villa Carlos Paz. So far in 2023, Holcim Argentina's cement plant kilns are using an average of 13% refuse-derived fuel (RDF), almost twice as much as in 2022.. The company is committed to raising the percentage to 46% by 2026.

"With this station, we are moving forward with more solutions to accompany our clients and strategic partners in meeting their sustainability and circular economy objectives, innovating in the integrated management of waste, recovering it and reinserting it into a new industry that, through our processes, will become part of a new product," commented Christian Dedeu, chief executive officer of Holcim in Argentina.

Mexico: Cemex has launched its global waste management subsidiary Regenera. Regenera will be involved in the reception, management, recycling and coprocessing three major waste streams: municipal and industrial waste, construction, demolition and excavation waste (CDEW) and industrial by-products. It will tie in with Cemex’s own cement sustainability initiatives, for instance in its supply of waste recovered from the River Nile to Cemex Egypt’s Assiut cement plant for co-processing as alternative fuel (AF).

Thailand: ThyssenKrupp Polysius says that it has successfully supplied and installed a Prepol SC alternative fuels (AF) system at a 12Mt/yr cement plant in Thailand. The system will supply the plant's four lines with 4000t/day of AF.

ThyssenKrupp Polysius' Asia Pacific CEO Lukas Schoeneck said "Asia Pacific, with its tremendous municipal solid waste (MSW) problem, is ideal when it comes to replacing coal with AF. The Prepol SC technology significantly reduces the need to treat MSW before using the inherent calorific value. Additionally, it helps to further reduce the ambitious CO₂ limit targets in the region."

Spain: Mexico-based Cemex and its venture capital subsidiary Cemex Ventures have invested in Waste to Energy Advanced Solutions (WtEnergy), an energy startup company that has developed a process to transform solid waste into synthesis gas (Syngas) for industrial purposes.

WtEnergy converts biomass and non-recyclable waste into Syngas, which can be used in the short-term as a fossil fuel alternative or be upgraded in the medium- and long-term to gases such as biomethane or pure hydrogen. Cemex intends to incorporate this energy source into its clinker and cement manufacturing process, looking to further reduce the carbon footprint of its operations. Cemex aims to increase its fossil fuel substitution rate by 20% by 2030.

Gonzalo Galindo, the president of Cemex Ventures, said, “This investment aligns with our strategy to find innovative clean fuel and energy sources for the cement industry.” He added, “We have outlined an ambitious rollout strategy across multiple operations, starting with Spain and other European countries before expanding to other international markets.”
