Taiwan: Asia Cement Corporation tested its waste wind turbine blade processing capacities using 12t of blades earlier in November 2023. The cement producer had previously processed 9t of waste turbine blades for use in its plants up to the end of October 2023. Asia Cement Corporation says that the waste consists of fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP), which is 60% silicon dioxide, calcium oxide and aluminium oxide and 40% polyester. The polyester can replace fossil fuels as alternative fuel (AF) for cement plants, while the other chemical compounds can serve as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs).

Taiwan: Taiwan Cement has commenced the construction of a US$143m waste processing plant and ecopark at its 1.6Mt/yr Hualien cement plant. Japan-based Kawasaki Heavy Industries provided the design for the facility and visitor attraction. When commissioned, the plant will supply the Hualien cement plant with 200t/day of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) produced from municipal solid waste from Hualien. Taiwan Cement estimates that the move will eliminate 40,000t/yr of CO₂ emissions from the plant’s operations.

Taiwan: Taiwan Cement plans to spend at least US$19m on building waste gasifiers at its Ho-Ping cement plant in Hualien County. The unit will be used to burn solid municipal waste, according to the Taipei Times newspaper. The Hualien City government awarded the tender to the cement producer in May 2019. Taiwan Cement intends to build the unit by 2022 whilst it gathers the necessary operating permits. However, Taiwan Cement faced opposition at a public meeting on the project in June 2019. It defended the plans saying that its Guigang plant in Guangxi Province, China burns 0.33Mt/yr of solid waste.

China/Taiwan: Taiwan Cement plans to invest in the Chinese waste recycling market by bidding on projects with local company Beijing Orient. TCC International, a subsidiary of Taiwan Cement, is to select one of its plants in China as the pilot site for the cement kiln project, according to the Taipei Times. The company has set a long-term capacity target of processing 10Mt/yr of waste that is expected to generate over US$688m of profit. At present its plant in Guizhou has an input capacity of 200t/day.
