UK: Hanson’s Ribblesdale cement plant plans to upgrade its automatic feed system to increase its usage of solid recovered fuel (SRF). It is part of a three-phase fuel strategy to reduce the amount of coal the unit uses. The subsidiary of Germany’s HeidelbergCement has been using SRF since 2011.

“Successful trials have also been carried out to burn waste paper residues from motor oil filters in the kilns and use of this as an additional alternative fuel will start in 2020,” said Simon Moorhouse, Hanson Cement’s operations manager.

UK: Andusia has exported its first consignment of solid recovered fuel (SRF) to an unnamed cement producer operating a Mediterranean plant. The deal is the company’s first SRF contract.

“As Andusia diversifies into other forms of recovered fuels exported to Europe and also within the UK, we hope this further demonstrates how knowledgeable and diverse our business and the Andusia team is,” said Mark Terrell, director at Andusia.

India: Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar says the state has approved US$12m to nearly double the production capacity of a solid waste management plant at Saligao. The production capacity of the unit will be increased to 250t/day, according to the Times of India newspaper. Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) from the unit has previously been sent to cement plants in Karnataka. Other solid waste processing plants have also been announced in Cacora, Bainguinim and Verna. Work on the plant in Cacora is scheduled to start by October 2018.

France: Solid recovered fuel (SRF) manufacturer Environnement 48 has ordered a XR3000C mobil-e shredder from Austria’s Untha. The new unit has an expected production capacity of 10,000t/yr. It will mainly be used to process plastics and wood to a particle size of 80mm. It follows a previous order of an XR Ripper waste shredder by the French company.

Chile: Waste management company KDM and Finland’s Griffin have partnered up to produce solid recovered fuel (SRF). The waste fuel will be produced at KDM’s Loma Los Colorados waste separation plant, according to the El Mercurio newspaper. An investment of US$5.3m will be made at the site and it expects to produce 30,000t/yr of SRF. Fuel from the unit will be marketed to the local cement industry.

Ireland: Irish Cement has been granted planning permission by An Bord Pleanala for its plans to burn tyres and tyres and solid recovered waste at its Limerick plant. Local councils originally approved the project in 2017 but this was appealed to the national An Bord Pleanala following local protests. Environmental groups say they will continue to fight the plan.

UK: Saxlund Group will present a number of case studies covering its experiences supplying alternative fuels and bulk handling systems for cement plants in Europe at the upcoming Global CemFuels Conference taking place in Berlin. Its references include a complete end-to-end solution for one of the UK’s largest cement kilns, incorporating the reception, storage, transportation, screening, weighing and pneumatic injection of solid recovered fuel (SRF). Other project experience includes secondary fuel-handling solutions for CBR Cement in Belgium, plus a refuse-derived fuel (RDF) facility for LafargeHolcim at the company’s plant in Höver, Germany. The company will also be explaining some of the issues encountered when handling modern alternative fuels and how to ensure full plant availability with minimal downtime.

The company will also be explaining its design approach for minimising storage and transfer issues for what can be sticky and challenging materials, including SRF, RDF and other biomass fuels. A key focus will be on activated silo discharge solutions and conveying equipment with an emphasis on ‘First in, first out’ design principles to minimise compaction and material conglomeration. Key technologies covered will include the company’s leading Push Floor and Sliding Frame solutions, bucket elevators and enclosed chain conveyors, plus integrated screening, weighing and dosing solutions.

US: RePower South (RPS) has started building the Berkeley County Recycling and Recovery Facility, a mixed waste processing plant. The turnkey recovery system will be provided by Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) under an engineering procurement and construction (EPC) agreement with Barnhill Contracting Company. When production begins in early 2019, the Moncks Corner, South Carolina plant will process 50t/hr of mixed waste sourced from Berkeley County to recover recycled commodities and a fuel feedstock.

The plant will use a BHS FiberPure system, consisting of BHS screens, NRT optical sorters and Max-AI autonomous quality control units to remove unwanted fractions to produce an end product with minimal manual sorting. Non-recyclable fibres and plastics destined for fuel will undergo further filtering by NRT SpydIR optical sorters equipped with MetalDirector options to remove unwanted contaminants. Max-AI AQCs are also utilised in each sorting position on the container line. In total, the system will use seven NRT optical sorters and nine Max-AI AQCs. In addition, Loesche Energy Systems will provide a Loesche RocketMill for size reduction. The system will also features two Kadant PAAL balers.

Japan: Austria’s Untha has agreed a new distribution partnership with Yokohama-based engineering firm Sun Earth. The deal will see Untha’s manufactured shredding technology supplied to a number of waste and alternative fuel production facilities throughout Japan. The agreement was arranged to help Sun Earth cope with demand for a shredding system that can tackle complex production waste, including single-step solid recovered fuel (SRF) manufacturing. Talks between the companies started in mid-2017.

Sun Earth has already placed an order for an Untha XR3000C shredder scheduled for shipment in early 2018.

India: The city corporation of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala has finalised its proposal to supply solid recovered fuel (SRF) to the local cement industry. Two companies in Tamil Nadu have expressed interest in the project, according to the Times of India.
