Iceland: Norway-based Geminor and recycling company Islenska Gamafélagid plan to raise their exports of refuse to 25,000t/yr and to begin exporting new fractions of refuse. This expansion builds on a collaboration launched by the companies in 2020 to redirect materials from Icelandic landfills to waste-to-energy plants elsewhere in Northern Europe.
Geminor’s senior operations associate Helga Eggertsdottir said “Europe – and therefore also Iceland – is phasing out landfill, and therefore Icelandic waste will need better sorting. Limited domestic capacity for recycled resources means that the need for export will increase. This growing stream is made possible due to the substantial capacity of returning container transport from Iceland. The alliance between Geminor and Islenska Gamafélagid will continue to leverage Icelandic ‘waste’ as a resource, optimising the environmental and economic benefits of recycling. This cooperation is therefore reinforcing the commitment of both companies for a more sustainable waste management industry.”
Golden Bay Cement uses 80,000t of waste in EcoSure reduced-CO2 cement production to date
17 October 2022New Zealand: Fletcher Building subsidiary Golden Bay Cement has co-processed 80,000t of waste in production of its EcoSure reduced-CO2 general-purpose cement at its Golden Bay, Whangarei, cement plant. The plant has achieved a coal substitution rate of 50%. It has processed various waste streams, including 3 million used tyres. EcoSure cement generates CO2 emissions of 699kg/t of product, 20% less than its imported alternatives, according to Golden Bay Cement. Fletcher building CEO Nick Traber said that this figure is 'simply our starting point.' The company's next target is to achieve a 30% CO2 reduction by 2030.
Traber said "We needed to think outside the box, or rather the cement bag, to be more precise. The challenge was around what enhancements we could make to our manufacturing processes at our Golden Bay cement works in to improve the plant's sustainability. We quickly realised that consuming used tyres and wood waste as alternative fuels was a win-win. When we started with the idea in 2015, we were aiming to replace 15% of coal with end-of-life tyres. Fast forward to 2022, and our rate of coal substitution is now at 50%, which has obviously delivered further reductions in carbon emissions, as well as helping to offset increased coal costs."
Norway: Geminor processed 67% of waste that it handled in 2021 into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and solid recovered fuel (SRF). The company said that the figure represents a 3% decline from 2020 levels. It handled a total of 1.73Mt of waste in nine European countries in 2021.
CEO Kjetil Vikingstad said “The Covid year 2021 has been another challenging year for the European waste industry in terms of volumes, logistics, transport and varying market mechanisms. The RDF market, in particular, has differed with lower volumes in circulation due to reduced exports from countries such as the UK and Finland. At the same time, other countries - such as Poland, Denmark, and Italy - have experienced growth, which has helped obtain a balance in the market.”
Hachinohe Cement to use cargo and oil from shipwreck as cement fuel
17 September 2021Japan: Sumitomo Osaka Cement subsidiary Hachinohe Cement has announced that it will be receiving heavy oil and woodchips from cargo washed ashore from the wreck of a ship at Hachinohe port on 11 August 2021. The company plans to use the waste as refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for cement production at its cement Hachinohe cement plant. The company said that the oil spill from the incident has had a great impact on the region. It added “In the future, we would like to actively promote the acceptance of wreckage with heavy oil attached and cooperate in the early resolution of the situation.”
Spain: UK-based Andusia has successfully completed its first delivery of solid recovered fuel (SRF) from its Beaupark Associated Waste Management SRF plant in Leeds, West Yorkshire to a cement plant in Spain. The supplier says that the delivery marks the start of the supply of 5000t/yr to the plant. The fuel will replace a portion of the coal and petcoke in the plant’s kiln line.
Geminor dispatches first rail-only RDF delivery
27 April 2020Sweden: Norway-based Geminor received a batch of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) produced at its Braunsbedra plant in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany for use at Scandinavian cement plants on 23 April 2020. The shipment was Europe’s first international shipment of RDF by rail, without the use of trucks. Geminor plans for the 110t delivery to be the first of many on the 50,000t-capacity line. Geminor CEO Kjetil Vikingstad said, “Since transport by ship is only effective within a radius of 200km from a port, central Germany becomes a natural starting point for
transport by train. This is the beginning of extensive waste transport by train in
Europe.”
Huaxin Cement helps dispose of coronavirus waste
25 February 2020China: Huaxin Cement says that it has disposed of 55t of medical waste from coronavirus-infected hospitals in Wuhan province at its 3.4Mt/yr Yangxin cement plant in Hubei province. Xinhuanet News has reported that the plant’s precalciner and rotary kiln have safely processed the batch, from its delivery in sealed trucks, through the combustion of the waste and its packaging, into cement.
Netherlands: Waste management service N+P has said that it will aim to supply 1.2Mt of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) to UK recipients expected to include cement producers. It will release full details of the contracts in question in early 2020. N+P said that due to import tax it would seek to supply its Netherlands contracts with waste from sources other than the UK.
Geminor commences RDF transport to Scandinavia
29 October 2019Italy: Geminor began exporting refuse-derived fuel (RDF) by freight train from its RDF-processing plant in Naples to Aalborg Portland Cement’s 2.1Mt/yr Rørdal integrated cement plant in October 2019. Geminor Germany and Italy Country Manager Andreas Hefler stated that the conveyance of 10,000t/yr of RDF in trainloads of 400t, though not significantly time-saving, represented an efficient and sustainable alternative to shipping and trailers. “We hope that others in the waste industry follow suit in transporting by electric train,” said Hefler.
UK/Ireland: Geminor says it has been engaged in a partnership with MSC transporting refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and solid-recovered fuel (SRF) from the UK and Ireland since February 2019. The first shipments were transported from Barking and Nottingham, UK to Aalborg, Denmark. This will be followed up by container shipments from Birmingham, UK to Habberstad, Sweden and Dublin, Ireland to Greece. The shipments are based on so-called ‘backload,’ where empty containers are used to reduce the price.
“Moving waste from the UK to Scandinavia can also be completed with trailers, but we will continue to use containers where this is the best option. Currently we are moving containers with RDF and SRF from Dublin to Greece and Spain, where container shipment is a more efficient way of transport,” said Oliver Caunce, Senior Account Manager at Geminor UK.
