LafargeHolcim Bangladesh and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association sign memorandum of understanding on waste management
28 November 2023Bangladesh: LafargeHolcim Bangladesh has expanded its waste management network through a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) with textiles industry body the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). Under the MoU, LafargeHolcim Bangladesh’s waste management subsidiary Geocycle will begin providing its services to BGMEA’s member companies.
The Financial Express newspaper has reported that LafargeHolcim Bangladesh CEO Mohammad Iqbal Chowdhury said “BGMEA is committed to the sustainable waste management of the clothing industry and unique solutions like Geocycle can play a pivotal role in addressing the waste challenges of the industry.”
India: JK Cement has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Punjab Renewable Energy Systems (PRESPL). Under the agreement, PRESPL will supply its technologies and forward-integrated value chain for use by JK Cement in scaling up alternative fuel (AF) substitution at its cement plants. The transition will focus on biomass-based fuel use.
Managing director Raghavpat Singhania said "As we embark on our journey towards decarbonisation, we commit to this MoU that allows us and PRESPL to build deeper synergies in the bio-energy sector.” He added that the agreement promised ‘a better future with a win-win for the environment, people and energy in India.’
Punjab Renewable Energy Systems to supply biofuel lines for three UltraTech Cement cement plants
13 October 2021India: UltraTech Cement has signed a memorandum of understanding with Punjab Renewable Energy Systems for the installation of biomass processing lines to produce cement fuel at three of its Indian integrated cement plants. The supplier will also build a sustainable supply chain of agricultural waste for the plants. The companies say that the deal will help to dispose of the waste, which is normally burnt in the open, and reduce the cement plants' Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Currently, the plants rely on imported coal. Additionally, it will augment incomes in local farming communities.
Jamaica: The government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Caribbean Cement for the use of tyres as an alternative fuel in cement production. The country is estimated to generate around two million used tyres annually, according to the Caribbean Media Corporation.
Philippines: Republic Cement has signed a memorandum of agreement with Nestlé Philippines to co-process post-consumer plastic waste. The agreement was signed by chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) Kais Marzouki and Corporate Affairs Head Attorney Ernesto Mascenon of Nestlé Philippines, and president Renato Sunico and director Nabil Francis of Republic Cement and Building Materials.
“Nestlé is aiming for plastic neutrality, which is essentially recovering plastics equal to what we produce. Aside from our current collection and recycling initiatives, we believe this effort will help us gather and co-process bigger volumes of post-consumer waste,” said Marzouki.
In April 2018, Nestlé globally announced a commitment that 100% of its packaging will be recyclable or reusable by 2025. The company’s vision is that none of its waste ends up in landfill or as litter. Nestlé has initiated and is driving waste collection efforts with various partners.
