Saudi Arabia: City Cement has announced that its waste management subsidiary Green Solutions for Environmental Services (GSES) has launched a new company to produce alternative fuel (AF) for local and overseas markets. The company is a joint venture in which GSES holds a 29% stake, with the majority stake held by Public Investment Fund subsidiary Tadweer Environmental Services. The joint venture has US$1.8m-worth of capital.

France: Vicat and waste management company Paprec have started a joint-venture based in Bouches-du-Rhône called ‘ALTèreNATIVE.’ They plan to start building a solid recovered fuel (SRF) plant with a capacity of 50,000t/yr from mid-2022 with commissioning scheduled for January 2023. The unit will supply alternative fuels to Vicat’s integrated cement plants. The project has an investment of Euro15m.

China: CNBM has entered into a joint venture with Conch Ventures to establish a business processing solid waste to support co-processing at its cement plants. The new company will process at least 3Mt/yr of solid waste.

UK: The Netherland’s N+P Group has started a joint venture with Simec to sells its refuse-derived fuel (RDF) pellet product Subcoal to power stations. The joint venture, Simec Subcoal Fuels (SSF), has signed a 20-year fuel supply agreement with the Uskmouth power station in South Wales, to supply 900,000t/yr tonnes of Subcoal. N+P and Simec want to build at least four new Subcoal production units in the UK to support the contract at Uskmouth.

“This joint venture with Simec is a very important milestone in our growth strategy for alternative fuels with the Fuel Supply Agreement as an excellent foundation, “ said Stijn Jennissen, commercial director of N+P Group.

Simec Group, based in Hong Kong, is an international energy, infrastructure and natural resources business. Its activities span renewable energy generation, mining, shipping and commodities trading through its key hubs in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. In 2016, Simec unveiled its plan to turn the existing 395MW Uskmouth Power Station Newport into a centre of excellence for Advanced Conversion Technologies, using biomass, waste and other sustainable energy sources.

Chile: Waste management company KDM and Finland’s Griffin have partnered up to produce solid recovered fuel (SRF). The waste fuel will be produced at KDM’s Loma Los Colorados waste separation plant, according to the El Mercurio newspaper. An investment of US$5.3m will be made at the site and it expects to produce 30,000t/yr of SRF. Fuel from the unit will be marketed to the local cement industry.

China: Dongwu Cement has struck an agreement with Suzhou Dongfang Jiujiu Industry to start a waste disposal company to supply alternative fuels for its kiln. The cement producer based in Wujiang City, Suzhou Prefecture and its partner will invest US$7.3m in the joint venture to start with, according to the ET Net News Agency. Dongwu Cement will own a 52% share in the company.

It will co-process urban sludge, organic waste and industrial solid waste. It will also collect, store and dispose of soil for soil remediation. It is expected the company will dispose of 50,000t/yr of industrial solid waste.

Dongwu Cement operates a 0.75Mt/yr cement plant with two grinding mills, giving it a cement production capacity of 1.64Mt/yr. It manufactures 42.5 and 32.5 class Ordinary Portland Cement.
