Japan: Sumitomo Osaka Cement has secured an agreement with Hyogo Prefecture for the future reception and processing of the prefecture’s waste from disasters such as earthquakes. The company says that the agreement will facilitate the rapid reception of such materials and to best support clean-up efforts.

President Hironori Morohashi said “We will continue to strengthen our cooperative relationship with Hyogo Prefecture and work to form a sustainable society and develop and improve the region.”

Japan: Austria-based Untha has awarded an exclusive distribution agreement in Japan to Axia. The distributor has taken delivery of a mobile Untha XR shredder for use as a demonstration unit at its customer sites and ordered six more models.

Axia CEO Kazunori Kawata said “China’s ban on waste plastic imports means Japan has sharpened up on its domestic recycling capabilities. The introduction of Untha’s engineering experience will really disrupt the market. Operators are starting to think differently about machine reliability, throughputs and lifecycle costs. As a nation, we must increase our productivity and capacity, and we need a different class of machine to be able to do this – one that is highly configurable, versatile and built to last. Output precision is also crucial.” He added “If Japan is to enhance its commitment to the environment, it is important that we seek to use energy efficient technologies within our waste and recycling facilities. Renowned globally for using 75% less energy than competitors’ diesel-hydraulic machines, the Untha XR shredder doesn’t just improve the net carbon impact of the process – it keeps fuel costs low, too. Some customers have been known to save US$135,000/yr in fuel costs alone.”

Japan: Sumitomo Osaka Cement subsidiary Hachinohe Cement has announced that it will be receiving heavy oil and woodchips from cargo washed ashore from the wreck of a ship at Hachinohe port on 11 August 2021. The company plans to use the waste as refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for cement production at its cement Hachinohe cement plant. The company said that the oil spill from the incident has had a great impact on the region. It added “In the future, we would like to actively promote the acceptance of wreckage with heavy oil attached and cooperate in the early resolution of the situation.”

Japan/Thailand: Aumund subsidiary Aumund Asia has installed a total of four Samson type 800 material feeders to waste management facilities in Japan’s Okinawa Region and Thailand’s Saraburi Province. The feeders have a capacity of 80t/hr and reduce dust emissions from handling and conveying operations thanks to their unique filter and enclosure.

Japan: Taiheiyo Cement has installed three BWZ bucket elevators and a Louise TKF drag chain conveyor supplied by the Hong Kong-based subsidiary of Aumund at its new power plant at Ofunato. The cement producer uses both biomass and coal at the plant.

Two elevators and the drag chain conveyor are used to transport palm kernel shells (PKS) and palm empty fruit bunches (EFB), which are used as alternative fuels in the power plant. Each has a capacity of up to 150t/hr. The conveying concept is designed so that the different materials are kept apart and enter the silo buffer tanks separately. The third bucket elevator is used for coal handling. It is a gravity discharge type BWZ-S elevator with a capacity of up to 35t/hr.

Japan: Sumitomo Osaka Cement is using debris from flooding and heavy rainfall that took place in mid-2018 in the southwest of the country as an alternative fuel and raw material for cement production. It used around 12,000t of waste in this manner by the end of July 2019. The materials have been used at its integrated Ako and Kochi plants. Previously the cement producer has used so-called ‘disaster waste’ created by earthquakes and typhoons.

Japan: Austria’s Untha has agreed a new distribution partnership with Yokohama-based engineering firm Sun Earth. The deal will see Untha’s manufactured shredding technology supplied to a number of waste and alternative fuel production facilities throughout Japan. The agreement was arranged to help Sun Earth cope with demand for a shredding system that can tackle complex production waste, including single-step solid recovered fuel (SRF) manufacturing. Talks between the companies started in mid-2017.

Sun Earth has already placed an order for an Untha XR3000C shredder scheduled for shipment in early 2018.

Japan: Austria’s Lindner-Recyclingtech has entered into a sales partnership with the Japanese company Ryohshin in Toyama to strengthen its presence in the region. The Japanese recycling technology company will assume responsibility for selling Lindner shredding products to the local waste management industry.

‘The Japanese shredder market is characterised by high demand and fierce competition, with a focus on replacing older systems, upgrades and expanding existing capacities. To succeed in this environment in the long term, we choose our partners worldwide according to very strict criteria,” said Osamu Kono, the chief executive officer of Ryohshin.

Japan: Aso Cement aims to raise its alternative fuels substitution rate to 50% by 2020 from its current rate of around 30%, according to comments made by its Tagawa plant manager Kenji Kawauchi to Jiji Press. The cement producer operates a unit capable of disposing of 160t/day of waste plastic at its Tagawa plant in Fukuoka Prefecture.
