Germany: Bilfinger, the civil and industrial construction specialist, is working with the American-based PRTI, whose thermal decomposition technology processes tyres into fuel. The aim of the partnership is to align PRTI’s tyre processors with Dutch safety and environmental standards, making them useable for waste processors and cement companies anywhere in the European Union.

Denmark: Norway’s Geminor has signed a deal with Danish energy producer AffaldPlus to deliver 150,000t of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for three years from January 2020. Geminor will deliver 50,000t/yr of RDF sourced from countries such as the UK, Italy and Germany. The logistics will mainly consist of bulk shipments but also train and road transport. No value for the order has been disclosed.

AffaldPlus is owned by six municipalities on the island of Sjælland. In addition to receiving and handling waste from the municipalities, AffaldPlus produces electricity and district heating at its plant in Næstved. Geminor will deliver about a third of the total annual secondary fuels burned in the incinerator at AffaldPlus.

Germany: Vecoplan has celebrated its 50th anniversary. It was originally founded in 1969 in Bad Marienberg in Westerwald where it maintains its headquarters. The company develops, produces and markets machinery and plants for shredding, conveying and processing primary and secondary raw materials gained in recycling processes.

Poland: Germany’s Vecoplan has opened an office in Warsaw to support the local market. Vecoplan Polska opened its branch office in November 2018. Ireneusz Suszyna will be the local lead for domestic and commercial waste and refuse-derived fuel (RDF). Machine and service sales will be handled by the new office and technical and project support will be provided from the head office in Bad Marienberg in Germany.

Germany: Intercem has been contracted to optimise the secondary fuel dosing system at an unnamed German cement plant. The scope of delivery includes disassembly on site, refurbishment of the trough chain conveyors that will be re-used, construction of a new bunker and installation of the refurbished screws. The engineering, as well as the assembly of the new components and the provision of the necessary cranes, hoists and other equipment, are also included.

Iraq: Germany’s Eggersmann Group has sold a drying system for municipal solid waste (MSW) to Faruk Group for use in a mechanical-biological waste treatment plant (MBT) being built at Suleymaniyah. 1040t/day of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) will be produced at the plant from MSW and commercial waste. Faruk Group intends to use the RDF at its cement plant.

The MBT plant includes 22 drying lanes with aeration and membrane cover. It is being built on a 40,000m² plot of land. Each lane has a capacity of 2600m³ MSW and will be fitted with aeration and process control. The project also includes a sanitary landfill with leachate collection for the processing residues.

Faruk Group assigned Eggersmann Group with the planning, supply and commissioning of the biological drying process phase. Eggersmann will use its Backhus Con system using a combination of the membrane-covered Convaero process and the self-propelled Backhus turner.

Eggersmann says that the Backhus Con 100 is the world's largest turner with an effective operation width of 10m and a total width of 14.5m. It is fitted with tracks to run along the outside of the lane walls, while the waste will be turned within the lanes. In addition, the Backhus Con is equipped with two membrane cover winders to simultaneously wind and unwind membrane covers during turning. Since the system is effectively closed during turning, this method is suitable for sites where emissions are a critical issue. A further advantage of the system is the short processing time. Even materials with a high moisture level and high density can be efficiently composted or dried.

At the front end of the treatment process at the Suleymaniyah MBT, an Eggersmann single-shaft Teuton ZS 55 shredder will allow continuous shredding and a uniform discharge of shredded waste to the conveyor systems towards the drying area. One Teuton ZS 55 in two-shift operation is sufficient to cover the site’s daily throughput.

The plant is designed for a throughput capacity of 380,000tyr. The plant will be in operation seven days a week with two operation shifts and one cleaning and maintenance shift per day.

The ground works at Suleymaniyah are being built and installation of aeration system for the drying lanes is scheduled to begin in May 2019. The delivery of the other components and machines is planned to start in June 2019 and the warm commissioning is expected to start at the end of 2019.

Germany: The Siebtechnik and Tema brands have merged as Siebtechnik Tema from the start of 2019. The aim of the merger is to create a common brand and to improve the subsidiaries sales and service structure with production sites and representative offices in Germany, the Netherlands, the US, the UK, France, Spain, China and Australia. Siebtechnik Tema manufactures equipment for processing mineral bulk solids including producing equipment for the recycling sector. It also makes solid-liquid separation equipment for the chemical and food industries.

Germany: Holcim Süddeutschland plans to co-process glass waste at the Dotternhausen cement plant. It has submitted an application to the local government to store 625t of glass waste at the site, according to the Zollern-Alb-Kurier newspaper. The glass waste will be used as a substitute for clay in the production process and it is proposed to be used at a rate no greater than 0.7t/hr. The plant will receive glass waste with a thickness no more than 3mm that cannot be recycled for glass production. The waste will be sourced from a processing plant in Bad Wurzach.

Germany: Vecoplan says that its sales have grown by 15% so far in 2018 and its orders have increased by 25%. It has attributed its growth to gaining new customers. The company manufacturers machines and systems for the resources and recycling industry for shredding, conveying and reprocessing wood, biomass, plastics, paper and other recyclable materials such as domestic and industrial waste.

Germany: Vecoplan has appointed Martina Schmidt as the head of its Recycling & Waste unit. She will be responsible for all of the company’s business activities in the markets plastics recycling, alternative fuel processing, recycling of domestic and industrial waste as well as file and data destruction. As part of the new role she will also join the company’s management team.

Schmidt, aged 47-years, started her professional career at Vecoplan in 1990 as an industrial clerk. She assumed the lead of the internal sales department in 2010, since 2013 the certified business economist took responsibility for the sales of the business unit Recycling & Waste.
