Thailand: Finland-based environmental technology company Tana Oy has entered into a partnership with Thailand-based GMC Engineering, a waste management solutions company. This partnership enables GMC to distribute Tana Oy's recycling machines and landfill compactors across Thailand.

Finland: Circular materials processing equipment specialist Tana Oy has received an initial investment from the CapMan Growth Equity III fund. Other participating investors include Elo Mutual Pension Insurance Company. The new funding is intended to fuel Tana Oy's further expansion. The company said that the Kangas family remain its primary owners.

Tana Oy expects to record €65m in turnover in the 2024 financial year (1 April 2023 – 31 March 2024). It maintained over 20% year-on-year growth in turnover over multiple previous years.

Finland: Norway-based Geminor inaugurated a new 150,000t/yr refuse-derived fuel (RDF) import facility at the Kilke Material Recycling Centre near Helsinki on 30 November 2023. The site is Geminor’s third such facility in Finland.

Country Manager Ismo Hiltunen said “Due to, among other things, lower activity in the construction industry, RDF fractions have become a scarce commodity in Finland.” He continued “After Finland became an import market for secondary fuels, the market has struggled to find processing sites for imported waste in Finland, a challenge this facility will now help to solve. The capacity of 150,000t/yr means that we could import up to 80% of Finland's current total RDF imports via this hub alone.”

Finland: Kuusakoski is planning to spend over Euro4m towards building a new composite shredding and treatment plant at Hyvinkää. The investment includes the renovation of a building that currently exists at the Kuusakoski Hyvinkää site, as well as the construction of the new processing line. The new plant will consist of two shredders, several covered conveyors, a magnet and a dust control system. 35% of the spend will be financed by Business Finland from RRF (Recovery and Resilience Facility) funding. Commissioning is scheduled by the end of 2025.

Mikko Kuusilehto, the president and chief executive officer of Kuusakoski, said "Our investment brings the circular economy solution piloted in Germany to Finland. With it, we can provide the best industrial scale recycling process for composite materials locally." He added, "The demand for a recycling solution for composites is rising already, as the amount of composite waste will increase: wind turbines, airplanes, boats and other vehicles contain considerable and increasing amounts of composites."

The shredded composite material will be supplied to cement plants for use as an alternative fuel.

Norway: Geminor processed 67% of waste that it handled in 2021 into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and solid recovered fuel (SRF). The company said that the figure represents a 3% decline from 2020 levels. It handled a total of 1.73Mt of waste in nine European countries in 2021.

CEO Kjetil Vikingstad said “The Covid year 2021 has been another challenging year for the European waste industry in terms of volumes, logistics, transport and varying market mechanisms. The RDF market, in particular, has differed with lower volumes in circulation due to reduced exports from countries such as the UK and Finland. At the same time, other countries - such as Poland, Denmark, and Italy - have experienced growth, which has helped obtain a balance in the market.”

South Korea: Finland-based BMH Technology has secured a contract to supply three waste shredding lines at Ssangyong C&E’s integrated cement plants at Donghae and Yeongwol. The lines will supply solid recovered fuel (SRF) for the units. Each line will include a Tyrannosaurus type FineScreen and Air Classifier for separating impurities. The full delivery will contain five Tyrannosaurus type FineShredders. The lines will be commissioned in the autumn of 2021.

Donghae plant will become one of the world’s largest SRF shredding plants producing alternative fuels for the cement industry once the order is complete. The unit will produce 80t/hr of SRF with a particle size under 25mm using two lines and four shredders. The cement plant is the world’s largest with a production capacity of 11.5Mt/yr.

Finland: Tana has celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding in 1971. It marked the occasion by setting an ambitious growth target of Euro100m within the next ten years from Euro40.0m in 2020. It said that the ‘open-minded and innovative’ tradition which it has maintained over the past 50 years will continue in future. Tana is a producer of waste shredders.

Finland: Metso has launched two new pre-shredders in its K-series. The new products are intended for sites with production requirements between 5 – 45t/hr. They are intended for market development in Asia. Particular features of the K-series include: both a synchronous and asynchronous shredding system with two shafts; a knife geometry that the company says reduces the risk of wrapping on the shafts; a modular system; and a build that allows easy access for maintenance.

UAE: Arkan Cement is set to sign a US$32m deal to set up a waste-to-power unit for its Al Ain plant. Martti Malmivirta, the chairman of Arabian Finnish Waste Refining (ARAFIN) that is partnering with Arkan Cement on the project, told the National newspaper that the 1000t/day unit will be the first in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. A joint venture will be set up between Arkan and Arafin, which itself is a joint venture between Eera Waste Refining of Finland and Daud Group of Oman. The new fuel stream will substitute use of natural gas at the plant.
