El Salvador: Geocycle has partnered with renewables company AES El Salvador to process end-of-life solar panels for use as fuel in cement production. The partners say that this will ensure circularity for all materials used in supplying El Salvador with renewable energy.
AES El Salvador said “AES applies circularity throughout the value chain of its solar plants, from the generation of renewable energy to the proper management of waste, and ensures that the waste produced throughout its cycle serves as raw material for other products and services. By adopting these principles, it contributes to the sustainable development of the country and promotes a cleaner, greener and carbon-free future for future generations.”
El Salvador: Switzerland-based LafargeHolcim subsidiary Holcim El Salvador has announced that it substituted 26,000t of refuse-derived fuel at its 1.7Mt/yr integrated El Ronco cement plant in Metapán, Santa Ana department, in 2019, up by 30% year-on-year from 20,000t in 2018.
In 2019 Holcim El Salvador produced 1.2Mt of cement. The company is currently investigating the possibility of installing a US$5m solar power plant at the El Ronco cement plant. It has signalled an intention ‘in the long term’ to resume operations at its 1.6Mt/yr Maya cement plant, mothballed in 2008, at an estimated cost of US$20m.
Geocycle to invest US$1m in El Salvador
17 June 2019El Salvador: Geocycle, the waste management subsidiary of LafargeHolcim, plans to invest US$1m in new equipment. It will be used to process solid waste before co-processing at a cement plant, according to La Prensa Gráfica newspaper. LafargeHolcim operates two integrated cement plants in the country.
