Colombia: Cementos Argos says that it processed 20,000t of waste into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) in 2021. The RDF replaced some of the fossil fuels in its cement plants’ fuel mixes. During the year, the company also increased its total volume of tyres used as fuel by 48%.

Honduras: Cementos Argos is investing US$23m on various projects including increasing its alternative fuels substitution rate. The cement producer is targeting a 12% refuse-derived fuel (RDF) substitution rate by 2030, the equivalent of 5500t/yr. If reached, this will reduce the company’s carbon footprint in the country by 14%. The company says it has also co-processed 1.5m waste tyres in Honduras. It has now signed a partnership agreement with Fundesur and Fundación Herco for the collection and delivery of 5,000 tires/month in Choluteca for co-processing.

Other projects Cementos Argos is working on include increasing the production capacity of its Piedras Azules cement plant and increasing the plant’s use of solar energy.

Honduras: Colombia’s Cementos Argos has launched a campaign to collect used tyres as part of a health and environmental initiative in Comayagua. Participants who supply used tyres will be rewarded with a fruit tree for each tyre returned, according to Periódico Digital. So far the 2019 campaign has seen a total of 2235 tyres collected. This is the fifth year that the cement producer has participated in the scheme.

Colombia: Cementos Argos co-processed more than 75,000t of solid waste in 2018. It burns alternative fuels at its Rioclara and Cartagena cement plants. Its plants also co-process up to 65,000t/yr of tyres.

Colombia: Cementos Argos has agreed a deal with the local government of Bogotá to use 2.5 million tyres as fuel for cement production. The cement producer’s Puerto Triunfo plant in Antioquia can co-process 20,000t/yr of tyres or about 1.5 million tyres, the president of Cementos Argos Juan Esteban Calle said to local press.

Colombia: Cementos Argos innovation vice-president Camilo Restrepo has persisted with a project to use waste tyres as an alternative fuel in Colombia. Some 120,000 - 130,000/yr tyres are wasted in Colombia.

Cementos Argos is already using waste tyres as fuel in the US and Honduras and says that the same will be done in Colombia. It put forward its plans to local associations and has been discussing these for five years. Cementos Argos could use 60,000 - 70,000t/yr. Its kilns will have to be adapted at cost of US$5 – 20m each. It will start with its unit in Rioclaro, where tests are underway already. The plant can use 15,000 - 20,000t/yr of waste tyres.
