US: Geocycle North America has received a new Untha XR mobil-e waste shredder at its plant in Dorchester, South Carolina. The mobile unit with 2 x 177hp motors, will process non-hazardous post-industrial waste to produce refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for LafargeHolcim’s Holly Hill cement plant. The shredder is currently configured to manufacture 10t/hr of RDF and the plant aims to generate 35,000 – 40,000t/yr of the fuel. Untha says that the new product replaces a previous shredder from another manufacturer.
Ecuador: Geocycle has commissioned a XR3000C mobil-e type shredder from Austria’s Untha for its Guayaquil operations. The product will be used to process various waste streams including plastic, paper and wood from industrial waste producers to support cement production. Biomass and municipal solid waste (MSW) processing is planned for the future.
“With Untha’s help, we’re helping Ecuadorian businesses transform waste into ‘ready for co-processing’ materials. We’ve invested in flexible, high capacity, single step shredding equipment, supported with world-class engineering support, so we are extremely excited about this plant becoming fully operational,” said Dorin Pepenel, Geocycle Ecuador.
Australia: Focus Enviro, a waste and organic equipment specialist, has secured an exclusive agreement with Austria’s Untha, making it the distribution partner for Untha’s shredding technology in Australia. Focus has its headquartered in New South Wales and it has a presence in Victoria, Queensland and the west of the country.
Untha’s director for global business development, Gary Moore, described Australia as one of the most exciting energy from waste markets in the world despite alternative fuel production being less developed than in Europe. “Landfill rates are rising, environmental pressures are mounting, China’s landmark movement has forced a new direction for the country’s waste framework, and a number of international waste operators, with a presence in Australia, are driving a global knowledge transfer programme to strengthen resource security,” said Moore.
Austria: Saubermacher Dienstleistungs has ordered a XR3000C shredder from Untha for the single-stage processing of commercial and household waste at a sorting plant in Vienna. The Styrian-based waste and recycling company produces refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for the cement industry. The company’s main requirement was that the RDF should have a particle size of less than 80mm and be produced by means of a single-stage shredding process, rather than a two-stage shredding process with coarse and fine shredding. Saubermacher Dienstleistungs wanted a machine with a throughput of at least 20t/hr. It also chose the XR3000C model for its energy efficiency.
France: Solid recovered fuel (SRF) manufacturer Environnement 48 has ordered a XR3000C mobil-e shredder from Austria’s Untha. The new unit has an expected production capacity of 10,000t/yr. It will mainly be used to process plastics and wood to a particle size of 80mm. It follows a previous order of an XR Ripper waste shredder by the French company.
Untha agrees Japanese distribution deal with Sun Earth
19 December 2017Japan: Austria’s Untha has agreed a new distribution partnership with Yokohama-based engineering firm Sun Earth. The deal will see Untha’s manufactured shredding technology supplied to a number of waste and alternative fuel production facilities throughout Japan. The agreement was arranged to help Sun Earth cope with demand for a shredding system that can tackle complex production waste, including single-step solid recovered fuel (SRF) manufacturing. Talks between the companies started in mid-2017.
Sun Earth has already placed an order for an Untha XR3000C shredder scheduled for shipment in early 2018.
Italy: Shredder manufacturer Untha says that it has overseen ‘significant’ growth following its collaboration with waste processing company Ecotec Solution. Since mid-2016 Ecotec Solution has secured six large projects for its Austrian partner.
These include three XR mobil-e sales for waste to energy facilities: one based in Trieste handling bulky input wastes for cement fuel preparation and two tackling pre-treated municipal solid waste (MSW) to create varied products including an infeed material for heat treatment. Other sales include a static XR3000C shredder for high performance <50mm solid recovered fuel (SRF) manufacturing, an XR2000R shredder for the <350mm processing of MSW and a TR2500 post shredder to produce a refined <30mm cement fuel from pre-treated light fraction.
“Landfill sites are closing and, due to a lack of more traditional waste disposal options, companies are looking for new channels for their residual materials,” said Ecotec Solution’s managing director Martin Mairhofer. “High value prices for SRF make this non-traditional treatment method an attractive alternative, but a significant degree of investment is required to design and build commercially robust plants.”
Marcus Brew appointed managing director of Untha UK
02 February 2016UK: Untha UK has appointed Marcus Brew as its new managing director. Brew was previously the sales director. The previous managing director since 1997, Chris Oldfield, will become the company chairman.
"Having been a part of the business for seven years, it is a pleasure to now lead the company through our next phase of growth. In truth, Chris and I won't feel much of a change, as we've both been concentrating on these responsibilities for some time – the new titles are really just a formality," commented Brew.
South Korea: A new solid recovered fuel (SRF) production facility is now fully operational in Wonju City, South Korea, thanks to global shredding company UNTHA and local partner PERITUS.
Korean waste management specialist Zion has built the SRF manufacturing plant to make smarter use of its residual materials. Now, with the new system in place, pre-sorted construction and demolition waste and commercial and industrial waste, is being shredded to produce a homogenous 50mm fuel for the cement industry.
The UNTHA XR3000C shredder with cutting concept was chosen following a series of trials at UNTHA's Austrian headquarters. Demonstrations showed that the technology could comfortably achieve throughputs of 60-70t/day, with scope to almost double that moving forward. The XR3000C's flexibility also means Zion can achieve a 40-50mm particle size from the single step shredding of plastic bales, which has further boosted the company's SRF production capabilities.
"South Korea may only be in the infancy of its waste-to-energy journey, yet the nation has formed a very sophisticated and disciplined approach to its waste roadmap relatively quickly. Legislation is in place to drive the production of <50mm SRF and the necessary infrastructure is fast evolving to accommodate this," said UNTHA's Head of Business Unit Waste Peter Streinik. "What we see here with Zion, however, is not just a company striving for compliance. They're prioritising energy efficiency, profitability and innovation too, to realise the wider benefits that come with smarter waste management."
Committed to principles akin to Europe's waste hierarchy, Zion extracts as many materials as possible, including bricks, metal, sands, glass and batteries, for re-use or recycling, prior to them entering the SRF manufacturing stream.
"Our family-run business is incredibly passionate about renewable energy, from solar power to alternative fuel production," said Zion's President Geumju Kim. "Now that our new SRF plant is up and running, with state-of-the-art configurable technology in place, the next step is to investigate relationships with different customers. We can satisfy varied specifications, and look forward to improving South Korea's resource agenda."
Holcim uses shoes as alternative fuel in Vietnam
19 August 2015Vietnam: Holcim is using shoes as an alternative fuel in Vientam thanks to its new solid recovered fuel (SRF) plant from shredding specialist Untha, according to Equipment World.
The new SRF plant will use waste from Vietnam's largest shoe factory once it has been delivered. It was pre-assembled and tested in Austria and is currently being shipped by sea to Holcim in Vietnam. Delivery is expected in September 2015. The SRF plant will convert the waste by using an anti-explosive Atex-specification XR3000 Cutter waste shredder with two 113kW motors, conveyor, over-band magnet, control room and water-powered fire suppression technology. The plant can process 10t of material into the 8mm, high calorific value fuel.
