UK/Ireland: Geminor says it has been engaged in a partnership with MSC transporting refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and solid-recovered fuel (SRF) from the UK and Ireland since February 2019. The first shipments were transported from Barking and Nottingham, UK to Aalborg, Denmark. This will be followed up by container shipments from Birmingham, UK to Habberstad, Sweden and Dublin, Ireland to Greece. The shipments are based on so-called ‘backload,’ where empty containers are used to reduce the price.

“Moving waste from the UK to Scandinavia can also be completed with trailers, but we will continue to use containers where this is the best option. Currently we are moving containers with RDF and SRF from Dublin to Greece and Spain, where container shipment is a more efficient way of transport,” said Oliver Caunce, Senior Account Manager at Geminor UK.

Spain: Cementos Alfa, part of Cementos Portland Valderrivas Group, has applied to its local environmental government body to increase its biomass co-processing rate. At present the cement plant in Cantabria is allowed to use up to 150t/day, according to the El Diario Montañés newspaper. The unit also spent Euro9m on energy savings upgrades to the main burner in 2018.

The plant produced around 0.5Mt/yr of cement in 2018 with a production capacity of 1.1Mt/yr. Production is expected to rise to 0.6Mt/yr in 2019.

Spain: Geocycle Spain’s Albox plant’s production of alternative fuels rose by 20% year-on-year to 53,000t of in 2018 from 49,000t in 2017. The company said it had invested Euro0.86m towards innovation in the business in 2018, including a new waste treatment line, according to the Ideal newspaper.

Spain: Cemex has signed a Euro117m deal with the local government to convert the land used by the Gádor cement plant in Almeria for use by new projects. These will include projects in solar and wind power generation, waste fuel production from plastics and biomass and a new concrete batching plant, according to Teleprensa. The initiative is intended to create around 400 jobs.

The cement producer has also signed a similar agreement for its Lloseta in Baleares. The company announced in mid-October 2018 that it was planning to close the two plants due to reduced demand for cement and mounting European CO₂ emissions regulations.

Spain: Local environment authorities have approved Cementos Cosmos to increases its alternative fuels substitution rate to up to 45% from its current limit of 30%. The plant has been supplementing its petcoke use with refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and biomass, according to the Córdoba newspaper. The plant, and its owners Brazil’s Votorantim Cement, have faced local opposition to changing its fuels mix.

Spain: Cementos Cosmos has stopped exports from its Niebla cement plant due to an increase in the price of petcoke. The subsidiary of Brazil’s Votorantim has also implemented a Temporary Regulation of Employment from June 2017 to May 2018 that will enable it to suspend workers or reduce working hours, according to the Huelva Información newspaper. The cement producer says it is waiting for planning permission to install a dosing system for waste fuels that will cut it fuel bill. However, the local community has opposed attempts to use alternative waste fuels previously.

Spain: Geocycle has increased the amount of waste it processes at its Albox plant in Almeria by 35% year-on-year to 40,150t in 2016. Solid and liquid waste is processed at the plant for subsequent use at cement plants operated by LafargeHolcim. The plant employs 35 workers directly and supports about 100 indirect jobs locally. Geocycle plans to invest around Euro250,000 in 2017 on safety and environmental systems and on its laboratory.
