N+P Recycling buys out Subcoal
19 October 2017Netherlands: N+P Recycling has acquired all the shares in Subcoal International as well as Subcoal Production. The move follows the initial purchase of a majority holding in these companies in 2013. N+P has since invested in the development of the Subcoal companies, including work at the Delfzijl production site.
The Subcoal concept was developed in 1998 by DSM but was only fully implemented on a large scale in 2010. Since N+P’s involvement in 2013, the concept has developed globally with demand growing for Subcoal as an alternative fuel used by cement or power plants.
Based on the success of the concept N+P expects a growth of the production capacity to 0.5 – 0.7Mt/yr. The first new production facility is expected in the UK by mid-2018.
N+P Recycling celebrates 25th anniversary
07 July 2017Netherlands: Alternative fuels specialist N+P Recycling has celebrated its 25th anniversary and the opening of its new headquarters in Nieuw-Bergen, Limburg. Company chief executive officer (CEO) Karel Jennissen presided at the event and Manon Pelzer, the mayoress of Nieuw-Bergen, was also in attendance.
200 guests attended the opening that included a guided tour of the new premises. At a ceremony marking the anniversary Karel Jennissen, with his wife Karin, presented the history of the company. Their three sons Lars, Stijn and Jens then gave guests a personal insight into their own experiences with the firm. This was followed the next day by a general tour of the facility for the local community with around 1000 members of the public.
A full report will be published in the September 2017 edition of Global Cement Magazine, including a visit to the company’s 80,000t/yr Subcoal production facility in Farmsum.

UK: N+P has appointed Neville Roberts as Managing Director UK for N+P Alternative Fuels. He will be based in N+P’s new UK office in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. His appointment follows the expansion of N+P to supply refuse derived fuel (RDF), solid recovered fuel (SRF) and its Subcoal product into UK domestic and European markets.
Roberts, a chemical engineer, has worked in the cement industry for over 35 years. He has worked for Rugby Cement, the Saudi Cement Company, RTZ Cement, Castle Cement, RMC and Cemex. Most recently he has been advising businesses, including N+P, on the use of alternative fuels. Roberts has specialised in production management and in particular the use of alternative fuels on cement kilns. Prior to leaving Cemex at the end of 2013 he was focussing heavily on alternative fuels in his role as Energy Business Development Director.
N+P and HC Miljö sign five-year contract
20 June 2016Sweden: N+P has signed a five-year contract to supply HC Miljö, a subsidiary of Heidelberg Cement, with Subcoal pellets. HC Miljö will supply Subcoal pellets to a number of cement kilns in northern Europe. The Subcoal will be used as an alternative fuel.
Subcoal will initially be supplied from N+P’s production site Subcoal Production FRM in the Netherlands. The site uses the Subcoal process to convert various industrial wastes into an alternative fuel. The process is focussed on using non-recyclable paper-plastic waste fractions, mainly sourced from the Netherlands, the UK and Germany.
Germany/Netherlands: HeidelbergCement has signed a six-year contract extension with waste management company Shanks Group for the supply of its ICOPOWER® energy pellets.
Under the contract, Icopower, part of Shanks' Solid Waste Division, will supply HeidelbergCement with an increased volume of 54,000t/yr of the pellets, which are derived from commercial waste.
Shanks' production process includes a combination of sorting, drying and pelletising technology. In a statement Shanks said, "Unlike solid recovered fuel (SRF) or refuse derived fuel (RDF), ICOPOWER® energy pellets are not classified as a waste product in the Netherlands."
UK/Portugal: N+P Group, a Netherlands-based waste processing firm, has landed a contract to supply 0.7Mt of solid recovered fuel (SRF) from UK recycling companies to cement plants operated by the Portuguese companies Secil and Cimpor. This follows N+P's first shipment of SRF from Grimsby, Lincolnshire to Portugal earlier in 2014. A 'minor part' of the contract will be satisfied by using waste from France and Italy.
Chairman Karel Jennissen said, "In recent years we have invested millions in developing the UK market to provide end users of our SRF sustainable supply concept. We put a lot of effort towards optimising quality levels of SRF in the UK market and have invested in the development of sustainable logistics chains. Now N+P has several port sites at strategic locations and the possibility to use a large number of sea containers."
