France: Vicat started using a CO2ntainer system supplied by UK-based Carbon8 Systems at its Montalieu-Vercieu cement plant in November 2020. It uses captured CO2 from the unit’s flue gas emissions to carbonate cement-plant dust and produce aggregate, which can then be used to make products such as concrete. The system has particular relevance for a plant burning alternative fuels due to the additional chlorinated dust created compared to the use of conventional fossil fuels. The company says it is the first European cement producer to use the process at an industrial scale. Previously, Carbon8 Systems said that its CO2ntainer would process and convert up to 12,000t of cement bypass dust in its first phase of operation.
Vicat Group scientific director Laury Barnes-Davin said, “We were drawn to Carbon8 Systems’ two-part technology: capturing the CO2 that Montalieu emits, and using it to produce an aggregate that can be marketed in the construction industry. It opens up great potential for our operations not just in France but also in all the countries where we work across the globe.” The group hopes to reach a 100% alternative fuel substitution rate in France by 2024.
LafargeHolcim France and ADEME Occitanie inaugurate waste recovery unit at Port-la-Nouvelle cement plant
11 October 2019France: LafargeHolcim France and ADEME Occitanie, the French Environment and Energy Management Agency for the region, have inaugurated a waste recovery unit at the Port-la-Nouvelle cement plant. The project has an investment of Euro7.5m with support from ADEME. It has included the installation of a drying workshop, a storage and feeding system to the kiln and a chlorine bypass for the kiln. It is intended to help the cement plant use solid recovered fuel (SRF) achieve a co-processing rate of over 90% by 2022.
The cement plant in Occitanie has been using alternative fuels including used tires, animal meal or industrial wood since 1988. Following the installation of a crushed solid waste valorisation workshop in 2011 it achieved a substitution rate of over 60% in 2018.
Oman: Four French investors and technology suppliers, including Fives and Suez, have created a syndicate to develop business opportunities in the Special Economic Zone Authority of Duqm. The other partners are CMA CGM and EDF Renewables. The companies intend to assess various investment options in the area and develop them. In particular, the syndicate has an interest in a ‘global approach to cement factory ecosystems’ and related facilities including transport facilities, a solar power generation plant and the production of alternative fuels.
Vicat showcases Vicat Circulère
29 November 2018France: Vicat has showcased Vicat Circulère, its construction waste management plant, at the Pollutec environmental exhibition in Lyon. The building materials producer has set itself the goal of no longer using fossil fuels at its cement plants by 2023. At present it has an alternative fuels substitution rate of over 50% at its cement plants in France.
France: Solid recovered fuel (SRF) manufacturer Environnement 48 has ordered a XR3000C mobil-e shredder from Austria’s Untha. The new unit has an expected production capacity of 10,000t/yr. It will mainly be used to process plastics and wood to a particle size of 80mm. It follows a previous order of an XR Ripper waste shredder by the French company.
France: LafargeHolcim has launched a Euro100m upgrade to build a new clinker production line at its Martres cement plant in Tolosane. Construction work on the new line will start in the third quarter of 2018 and will be completed in mid-2020. A key feature of the upgrade will be a focus on using alternative fuels in the new kiln, particularly tyres. Following the project’s completion the plant will have a substitution rate of 80% from 30% at present.
