UK: Andusia has signed a solid recovered fuel supply (SRF) supply contract with Powerday, a recycling and waste management company based in London. Powerday can process up to 1.6Mt/yr of construction, demolition, municipal, commercial and industrial waste.
Powerday completed a Euro2.25m upgrade to its materials recovery facility (MRF) in west London in mid-2018. Andusia and Powerday have formed a partnership in order to export 10,000t/yr of SRF to be recovered at a cement plant in the Mediterranean. This is one of Powerday’s first SRF trades since completing its MRF facility upgrade.
Iraq: Germany’s Eggersmann Group has sold a drying system for municipal solid waste (MSW) to Faruk Group for use in a mechanical-biological waste treatment plant (MBT) being built at Suleymaniyah. 1040t/day of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) will be produced at the plant from MSW and commercial waste. Faruk Group intends to use the RDF at its cement plant.
The MBT plant includes 22 drying lanes with aeration and membrane cover. It is being built on a 40,000m2 plot of land. Each lane has a capacity of 2600m3 MSW and will be fitted with aeration and process control. The project also includes a sanitary landfill with leachate collection for the processing residues.
Faruk Group assigned Eggersmann Group with the planning, supply and commissioning of the biological drying process phase. Eggersmann will use its Backhus Con system using a combination of the membrane-covered Convaero process and the self-propelled Backhus turner.
Eggersmann says that the Backhus Con 100 is the world's largest turner with an effective operation width of 10m and a total width of 14.5m. It is fitted with tracks to run along the outside of the lane walls, while the waste will be turned within the lanes. In addition, the Backhus Con is equipped with two membrane cover winders to simultaneously wind and unwind membrane covers during turning. Since the system is effectively closed during turning, this method is suitable for sites where emissions are a critical issue. A further advantage of the system is the short processing time. Even materials with a high moisture level and high density can be efficiently composted or dried.
At the front end of the treatment process at the Suleymaniyah MBT, an Eggersmann single-shaft Teuton ZS 55 shredder will allow continuous shredding and a uniform discharge of shredded waste to the conveyor systems towards the drying area. One Teuton ZS 55 in two-shift operation is sufficient to cover the site’s daily throughput.
The plant is designed for a throughput capacity of 380,000tyr. The plant will be in operation seven days a week with two operation shifts and one cleaning and maintenance shift per day.
The ground works at Suleymaniyah are being built and installation of aeration system for the drying lanes is scheduled to begin in May 2019. The delivery of the other components and machines is planned to start in June 2019 and the warm commissioning is expected to start at the end of 2019.
Metso signs service agreement for waste recycling equipment with Core Industrial Solutions in the UK
28 January 2019UK: Sweden’s Metso has signed a service partner agreement for its M&J waste recycling equipment with Core Industrial Solutions. The deal will allow Metso to improve the availability of its services to the waste recycling industry. It has over 100 waste recycling machines in the UK.
"Complemented by Core Industrial Solutions' expertise and commitment, our services will enable maximised plant and operational efficiency with continuous maintenance," said Jens Peter Martensen, General Sales Manager, Metso Waste Recycling at Metso. Metso has also strengthened its overall setup and customer service in the UK and Ireland, by increasing sales personnel amongst other measures, to respond to growing customer needs.
N+P to start Subcoal production at Teeside plant in July 2019
19 November 2018UK: N+P says that Subcoal production will start at its Teeside plant in July 2019. Following nearly a year of de-commissioning and site preparation works. The project has achieved financial close and construction work has commenced following nearly a year of de-commissioning and site preparation works. The plant will consume 0.25Mt/yr of commercial and industrial waste feedstock and will produce 0.19Mt/yr of N+P’s Subcoal product. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor is Fairport Engineering.
The Teeside plant will supply Subcoal pellets to different outlets including Simec Atlantis Energy (SAE) for use in its Uskmouth 220MW coal-fired power station, which is being converted from coal to waste-derived fuel. N+P and SAE have agreed a fuel-supply agreement to supply nearly 1Mt/yr to the power station once it has been converted to using Subcoal in place of coal in 2021. To meet demand for the contract, N+P plans to build a further three Subcoal plants.
Beumer supplies alternative fuels conveying and feeding system for Dyckerhoff’s Deuna cement plant
16 February 2018Germany: Beumer is supplying a conveying and feeding system for alternative fuels for Deuna Zement’s plant in Thuringia. Umweltdienste Bohn, based in Alsfeld, was commissioned to supply the subsidiary of Dyckerhoff with alternative fuels and will build a processing plant on Deuna’s premises as part of this partnership.
As the general contractor, Umweltdienste Bohn engaged the Beumer Group for a conveying and feeding system using a pipe conveyor. The scope of supply also includes three feeding hoppers with a screw conveyor, belt conveyor, rotary starscreens and scales as well as steel structure, electronics and controls. Commissioning is scheduled for February 2018.
N+P extends solid recovered fuel supply agreement with Vassiliko Cement
22 September 2017Cyprus: N+P International has extended its solid recovered fuel (SRF) supply agreement with Vassiliko Cement to the end of 2020. The deal also includes an option to further extend the agreement to the end of 2022. N+P has been supplying Vassiliko Cement with SRF from the UK and Italy by sea since 2015.
“This contract is the foundation of a long-term cooperation between Vassiliko Cement, Enerco Energy Recovery and N+P. The parties intend to maximise alternative fuel consumption in the Vassiliko Cement plant, to do so parties recently carried out a trial to co-grind N+P’s Subcoal pellets in the plants coal mills. The first results of this trial are looking very promising and further trials will be done the near future. We agreed not to disclose precise contract volumes, but at present >2500t/week of SRF is shipped into Vassiliko Cement,” said a representative of N+P.
Vassiliko Cement plans to reach a 55% substitution rate of alternative fuels by 2020.
China: FLSmidth, Sino Environment Engineering Development (SEPTEC) and China Resources Cement (CRC) have signed a partnership to provide pyroprocessing co-processing systems to cement plants. FLSmidth will be responsible for the design, engineering and integration of the integrated waste burning solution, with SEPETC acting as a general contractor.
The agreement follows a project at CRC's Hongshuihe cement plant that took municipal and industrial waste from the city of Binyang in Guangxi. FLSmidth installed a Hotdisc system that could process 300t/day of waste to support the cement plant’s cement production capacity of 3200t/day.
"China's energy intensive industries, such as cement production, are coming under pressure from the government that wants to rebalance the economy towards a less energy-hungry mode of growth, curb pollution and reduce carbon emissions. CRC plans to initiate several similar municipal solid waste co-processing projects for other cement producers with FLSmidth and SEPETC as partners," said FLSmidth China Country Manager, Cyril Leung.
In China's latest five-year plan, the government encourages more cement producers to co-process municipal solid waste in the cement industry, with an aim of getting 15 - 20% of the cement kilns in the country to be co-processing waste by 2020. In 2017, China will introduce a national carbon-trading scheme in 2017.
Awbud signs deal with LafargeHolcim
21 July 2016Poland: Awbud has signed a deal worth Euro2.85m with LafargeHolcim to build an alternative fuel warehouse and an office building. The deal follows another agreement signed between the companies for an ash-separation installation at Elektrownia Siekierki power station, in which LafargeHolcim has a 30% stake.
Bee’ah selects BHS for Sharjah Recycling System
10 March 2016UAE: Bee’ah has selected Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) to design, engineer, manufacture and install a major retrofit to the company’s Sharjah Material Recovery Facility. The facility is currently the largest in the Middle East, with the capacity to process more than 500,000t/yr of municipal solid waste (MSW). The retrofit, scheduled to be operational in early 2017, will upgrade capacity and automation to increase recovery and total diversion.
BHS will implement its latest technologies, including BHS Bag Breakers and Tri-Disc screens, Nihot air separators and NRT In-Flight Sorting brand optical sorters. BHS Tri-Disc screens will replace existing trommel screens to improve separation efficiency, decrease energy consumption and increase throughput. BHS screens will also boost the recovery of organic materials by 50% to 600t/day. The system’s throughput will expand from 68t/hour to more than 75t/hour.
Nihot Single Drum Separators will separate heavy items such as bulky metals and inert materials from lighter, high-value recoverables such as fibre and containers. To increase film recovery by 100%, NRT SpydIR optical sorters are paired with Nihot rotary air separators, creating the FiberPurefilm recovery system. The FiberPure will detect and eject film, pneumatically conveying it away from the remaining clean fibre stream. The NRT SpydIR optical sorter is also being employed to increase PET recovery by 15%. Magnets and an Eddy Current Separator will increase ferrous and non-ferrous recovery by 25%. The BHS Total Control controls package will integrate pre-existing and new equipment, empowering the entire system with advanced SCADA technology.

Germany/Netherlands: HeidelbergCement has signed a six-year contract extension with waste management company Shanks Group for the supply of its ICOPOWER® energy pellets.
Under the contract, Icopower, part of Shanks' Solid Waste Division, will supply HeidelbergCement with an increased volume of 54,000t/yr of the pellets, which are derived from commercial waste.
Shanks' production process includes a combination of sorting, drying and pelletising technology. In a statement Shanks said, "Unlike solid recovered fuel (SRF) or refuse derived fuel (RDF), ICOPOWER® energy pellets are not classified as a waste product in the Netherlands."
